The South Asian-inspired fashion house RAAS (meaning ‘aesthetics’ in Sanskrit), debuted its newest collection EZORA as the Headliner for the 2nd annual South Asian New York Fashion Week, Sept. 10, 2023. Actress Richa Moorjani, best known for her role as Kamala in the popular Never Have I Ever series, was a showstopper at the event which was held at Chelsea Square in the heart of New York City. On the occasion, RAAS (raastheglobaldesi.com) unveiled EZORA: The United Blend collection which showcased the intertwining of two distinct cultures – a fusion of the western silhouettes and the art of Gujarat, a press release from the organization said. Moorjani walked the runway in RAAS’s 3-piece Lehenga (a top, skirt, and scarf) crafted from premium gaji silk and adorned with mirror embroidery and ajrakh print. The lehenga she wore was made from vegan silk and hand embroidered. “I’m honored to partner with a brand that’s aligned with my values of uplifting Indian craftsmanship and their dedication to sustainability and ethical fashion,” Moorjani is quoted saying in the press release. RAAS showcased 26 flowing silhouettes with intricate patterns that pay homage to the artistry of Gujarat. “Styles ranging from modern dresses and 2-piece co-cord sets to traditional lehengas in the EZORA collection told a story of collaboration and cross-cultural inspiration with bold colors, delicate embroidery, and modern designs,” RAAS said in the press release. Shreya Patel, the creative director, and founder of RAAS, launched the brand in 2018 with a mission to employ artisans in her design house, and follow ethical practices and manufacturing, including fair wages. “The Ezora collection is about crafting experiences, telling stories, and leaving a lasting impression. At RAAS, we believe in weaving emotion into every design, making every moment unforgettable and that’s what it was like for us to unveil this collection at South Asian New York Fashion Week” designer Patel said. “RAAS caters to the modern expectations of the Global Desi—the world citizen with Indian roots, who is quintessentially Indian at heart,” the press release said. The South Asian New York Fashion Week (sanyfw.com) aims to bring fashion and culture of the Subcontinent to New York Fashion Week.
