South Korean filmmaker seeks laughs in new comedy

Despite being known for horror films, South Korean director Ahn Byeong-ki seems eager to use comedy to win the hearts of Chinese moviegoers.

His upcoming film Scandal Maker charmed an audience in a preview screening on the weekend; moviegoers wore brain wave-monitors on their head. Through analyzing the data transferred from the monitors to computers, the movie was found to be very "relaxing and funny", according to the monitor’s providers.

Ahn says there is a similarity between comedy and horror films: Both need to create "exciting moments" to lure viewers.

A Chinese remake of the namesake South Korean film screened in 2008, Scandal Maker features an established broadcaster, 38, who lives a comfortable bachelor's life until the peace is broken by two visitors, who insist he is the grandfather of a 5-year-old child.

The Sino-South Korean coproduction, mainly financed by Chinese studios, will open in Chinese mainland theaters on Nov 11, which is Single's Day in China.

The star-studded cast is led by actor Tong Dawei and Taiwan actress-singer Michelle Chen.

"Just imagine one day a stranger calls you grandpa but you’ve never seen the child before. The script is very interesting. I could not stop after reading the first several paragraphs," says Tong.

"The movie transfers a positive message: Family is the most important connection for every person," he says. Source: China.org.cn

Ekta Kapoor is always open to new, creative advancements. Being a modern-day producer, Ekta always wishes to give audiences new stories and experiences when they go to the cinema. Recently, when she announced her tie-up with Dolby Atmos for her upcoming film, Azhar, Ekta had an interesting take as to why she adapted to this new technology. Ekta confessed that Hollywood films are what truly inspire her creatively and it was the incredible sounds in the movie Mission Impossible that astonished and inspired her to bring such experiences for the Indian audiences. Ekta was heard saying, “I was so mesmerised by movies such as Gravity and MI-4 that as a director-producer I felt the need to get similar technology to Bollwood. A movie is all about the story – direction, costumes, acting — but what adds that added zing is the sound.”Source: http://www.tribuneindia.com/

Its important to maintain innocence in adult comedy: Riteish Deshmukh

Actor Riteish Deshmukh, who would be next seen in adult comedy, 'Kya Super Kool Hai Hum', says it is important to maintain some kind of innocence in such films without going overboard. After the success of 'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum' in 2005, Riteish is again pairing up with Tusshar Kapoor in this sequel to tickle the funny bone of the audience. Tusshar plays a struggling actor, while Riteish is a struggling DJ. The duo play innocent men, who inadvertently get into trouble doing things. Also, both the actors are set to get dirtier with their acts in the sequel. "While we were enacting few scenes for 'Kya Kool Hai Hum', we had no idea how the audience would react to those scenes, as we were attempting something new and different. We were trying to maintain the innocence. What happens is when you have a film like this, an adult comedy to maintain innocence in it is important," Riteish told reporters last evening, after unveiling the first look of the sequel. "That time when we were working we were thinking how we would maintain things rightly," he said. And it was the storyline that forced him to do the film. "Tusshar and I had read one-two scripts, for this sequel, but nothing interested us that time. But this time around, Sachin came up with this script and it was accepted by Ekta Kapoor (producer), even when I read it I also liked it. Script was the main reason for me to do this sequel," he said. "There is uniqueness and newness to the storyline, it takes from where the two characters left..humor is also of new kind. The humor quotient and the way of presenting it is also different." The film directed by Sachin Yardi, besides featuring the duo - - Tusshar and Riteish -, stars Neha Sharma and Sarah Jane Dias, who are the new additions to the second installment. The trailer, available on the web, opens with the signature tune and some shots from 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham'. It further shows that how Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Jaya Bachchan are being shown as thoroughly disgusted with the obscene acts of Tusshar and Riteish. "When we use any footage of other film it cannot be given without the permission of the filmmaker. I must say, hats off to Karan, who has a great sense of humor. `Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham - - is a cult classic family movie, not many people would have the guts to make fun of their film. But to understand and have a sense of humor is important," Riteish said. "It ('Kya Super Kool Hai Hum') is not a family film and we are trying to say that through by using Karan's film. We are not making fun of his film, instead we are making fun of our film by saying it is not a family film. It is not about getting family together, but having fun and enjoying," he said. Classic Comedy-Mystery 'Clue' Makes Its Blu-ray Debut Aug. 7

Clue the movie blu-ray
In "Clue," a spoof of McCarthy-era paranoia and 1950s wholesomeness, the characters and plot are drawn from the popular Parker Brothers board game of the same name. On a dark and stormy night in 1954, six individuals with ties to Washington are assembled for a dinner party at the swanky mansion of one Mr. Boddy (Lee Ving). Boddy's butler, Wadsworth (Tim Curry), assigns each guest a colorful name: Mr. Green (Michael McKean), Col. Mustard (Martin Mull), Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan), Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd), Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren), and Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn). Two additional servants, the Cook (Kellye Nakahara) and Yvette, the maid (Colleen Camp), assist Wadsworth as he informs the guests that they have been gathered to meet the man who has been blackmailing them: Mr. Boddy. When Boddy turns up dead, however, the guests must try to figure out who killed him so they can protect their own reputations and keep the body count from growing. Three separate endings were filmed for "Clue" and shown in different theaters; all three are collected for the Blu-ray edition with an option to watch them all or have them played randomly, as well as the theatrical trailer. Although the film is set in the 1950s, the original Clue game was actually devised by Anthony Pratt, a clerk in Leeds, England, to pass the time during World War II air-raid drills. First released in 1946 under the name Cluedo by British manufacturer Waddington's, Clue was renamed and released in the U.S. in 1949. Photo Credits: Paramount. Source: Starpulse

Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum – Movie Review

kyaa-super-kool-hain-hum-02
‘Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum’: Uncool show of tasteless humour, bad acting
Film: “Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum”, Starring: Riteish Deshmukh, Tusshar Kapoor, Director: Sachin Yardi, Rating: Beyond Rating , Sach mein, boss. Kya super-kool film hai. There are these two jobless, aimless, witless guys one of whom can’t act to save his life, and the other one who can act but has to pretend he can’t to keep pace with the one who can. Now, get a load of this. Sid (Riteish Deshmukh) is a struggling musician. Adi (Tusshar Kapoor) is a struggling actor. And they’re part of a sex comedy struggling to be funny in every single line that these two chaddi buddies utter to one another and to the world at large. So the real hero of this masterpiece of murky mirth is the dialogue writer. He uses every possible occasion in the dialogue draft to slip in sexual puns. Not a single human orifice is spared in the furious fusillade of double innuendos. In that sense, this a very democratic comedy. It insults every one and everything from dogs to humans, from gays to gurus…you name it. And why shouln’t it? This is after all the official sequel to a 2005 comedy that defied every rule of good taste. “Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum” multiplies the filth manifold. The packaging and presentation are this time updated. The glamour quotient is enhanced with the presence of two engaging eye-candies Neha Sharma and Sarah Jane Dias who join in the vulgarity with a gusto that suggests a deep bond between risque humour and sex appeal. So is risque sexy? Is raunchy cool? You decide. As far as I am concerned I am still too numbed by the ceaseless torrent of verbal obscenity to figure out if a barrage of dirty puns and phallic objects being stuck
into every conceivable hole, strung together in a succession of gags and episodes can be called a film. Delhi Belly, here they come? There are some good comic actors here, giving really bad performances. The gay jokes are stretched to limits beyond offensiveness that climaxes with the two ladies dressed as Chandramukhi and Paro singing “Dildo la dildo la”. That pun on the original song Dil dola from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Devdas” was smsed ad nauseam when the film was released in 2002. Most of the pssst-pssst jokes in this farce fest come across laboured and tired. Deshmukh, a comic actor of impeccable aptitudes, does his best to breathe life into gags and situations that elevate puerility to an art form. He succeeds in making us titter when we aren’t busy squirming over the onslaught of obscenity. The rest of the cast takes the cult of crassness to hammy heights. Anupam Kher, for example, plays a millionaire in Goa who believes his dead mom has been reincarnated as a canine. And when he catches his alleged ‘mom’ doing what doggies do when they are in a film of this sort, he assumes his mother is now getting on her four legs what his father never gave on two legs. If you think the above situation is funny, then go ahead. Go for the film and laugh your head off at the frenzy of phallic jokes. Oh yes , lest the other gender feels left out there’s a ‘joke’ about the other kind of genitilia too when Ritesh dumps a cat into Tusshar’s hands and says, “Take it. This is the only pussy you’re ever going to get.” Pussy or not pussy, that is hardly the question. Humour them. Laugh. – IANS, Source: Bollywood World

Review: 'Killer Joe' A Brilliant, Depraved, Black Comedy

Killer Joe
'Killer Joe' written by the brilliant, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Tracy Letts (based on his play) and directed by the 70+ year old, William Friedkin (Exorcist) blew me away for many reasons. But the main one is Matthew McConaughey's extraordinary Oscar worthy performance as cop/hitman, Killer Joe Cooper. Never has McConaughey been better or more terrifying. The film is a black comedy. It's violent, sexual, raw, thrilling and yes, funny in a very dark twisted, sort of way. The story revolves around a trailer trash dysfunctional family and the killer they hire to knock off someone, that is definitely NOT near and dear to them. Sharla Smith (Gina Gershon) is a woman who enjoys parading her naked body around her
stepson. Chris (Emile Hirsch) shares a trailer with her loser hubby, Ansel (Thomas Haden Church) and his daughter, Dottie (Juno Temple). Chris borrowed a large sum of money from a group of nasty men and now they want it back. Trouble is, Chris is broke and can't pay them. But the dude has a plan...Kill his mother (Ansel's ex-wife) and collect the insurance money. Daddy Ansel thinks it's a super idea and he's more than willingly to help his son execute the plan (now that's agood father). Unfortunately, as creepy as our guys are, murder is not exactly their thing. So they hire a cop/hitman, Killer Joe Cooper to do the job for them. Problem solved, right? Not quite. Killer Joe won't do the hit unless he's paid his fee of $10,000 upfront. Looks like the boys are back to square one and Chris's days are numbered. But miracles do happen, even for a low life like Chris. Seems Joe has taken a fancy to kid sister Dottie and he agrees to forgo his $10,000 fee for...one dinner date with the lovely girl. Chris says no way, but Miss Dottie agrees. Dinner starts out perfect, but then...well I don't want to spoil the fun by giving anything away. What I will say is, what happens in 'Killer Joe,' is definitely jaw dropping shocking, making this movie one you'll remember for a very long time. This is also one of director William Friedkin's best films...Which just goes to prove the saying 'some things do get better with age.' John and I both gave 'Killer Joe' which opens in theatres Friday July 27, 2010 4 1/2 bagles out of 5....John's biggestbagel score in a really long time. Check out of video for more of our thoughts. Source: Starpulse

Film Ferrari Ki Sawari Review

Director: Rajesh Mapuskar, Cast: Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Ritvik Sahore
Common men have simple dreams. And when they do aspire to lofty heights, they will leave no stone unturned to accomplish their fantasies. It's what we love. We should cheer for our hero when he's down on his luck, holding our breath when he struggles to overcome the odds. Ferrari Ki Sawaari isn't something that was put together in a hurry because the actors were available. This was homage to all the young boys who spend countless hours, dreaming of the day when they can wield the bat with the same passion as the master blaster does. It’s a good movie with its heart in the right place. Ferrari Ki Sawari is a simple story of a talented boy who dreams of making it big in the world of cricket. What makes the narrative interesting is its less-taken route (through a Ferrari) and the ensuing eventful journey. The slick sports car gives that additional momentum to the movie thereby ensuring a roller-coaster ride. Kayo (Ritvik Sahore) is just a school kid but plays cricket like a professional. Destiny gives him a chance to make it to the Lords Stadium in London for which he would need hefty coaching fees. His father Rustom (Sharman Joshi), an RTO head clerk, who leads a hand-to-mouth living, fails to get any loan. In the meantime a local corporator's son
wishes for a Ferrari in his marriage for which he is willing to pay any amount. In a chance encounter, Rustom manages to get his hands on Sachin Tendulkar's Ferrari which gets him the money. Trouble starts when the honest Rustom decides to give back the Ferrari. Cricket is the most common sport, Ferrari is the most uncommon car and together they make for a lethal combo in debutante Rajesh Mapuskar's movie. The sport is something that everyone can relate to and the sports car is something that every other person dreams of. At a broader level, the Ferrari also stands as a metaphor for that larger-than-life aspiration of any individual that might seem unattainable at the outset but isn't wholly impossible. Humour and drama go hand-in-hand in the movie and the diverse genres never overshadow each other at any point. Such is the beauty of the screenplay penned by Rajesh Mapuskar and Vidhu Vinod Chopra that it makes you laugh in one scene and gets a lump in your throat in the very next. Rajkumar Hirani keeps the dialogues straightforward and lifelike and the lines leave an impact without the need of any dramatic punch. The minimalism with which Hirani sketches the story makes you easily identify with the protagonist's dilemma. Despite the random and rampant ride that the Ferrari sets on, the narrative at no point complicates itself and steers away from any slapstick tendencies. Boman Irani, as the grandpa, who's had a bitter past with the game of cricket and doesn't approve of the sport anymore, makes for a conventional character. But the subtle scene where he faces his opponent from heydays (Paresh Rawal) who now heads the cricket board makes for a poignant moment. On the contrary, the Marathi corporator and his son, who contribute towards the comic track, lose their distinctiveness after a while. The son's fascination for Ferrari, the father's mission for samuhik vivah and their mutual discord do not pass muster and, more or less, remain peripheral to the central plot. The tale largely has a very pragmatic approach so it is somewhat surprising that the movie opts for a very suitable end. Also Sharman Joshi's melodramatic outburst in the pre-climax doesn't gel with the screenplay's otherwise out-of-box thinking. Most importantly, after having a symbolic representation of Sachin Tendulkar throughout the movie, it seemed quite unnecessary to get his body double in the last frame. However, what makes up for these minor inconsistencies is the fact that the movie has a heart of its own and is able to strike a chord with the average audience. This is director Rajesh Mapuskar's first outing as a director and he should be given full credit for a screenplay which steers clear of subplots, sexist jokes or the general paraphernalia foisted on hoping to make the movie a hit. The story zigzags between real, fantasy and make-believe and bizarre co-incidences which is a formidable task for any director leave alone a first timer. Rajesh Mapuskar does succeed in extracting decent performances from the whole cast. Sharman Joshi, as an uncertain and shy guy with a constant smirk on his face that tries to hide his inner sorrows, skillfully underplays his part. Occasionally he seems too passive but is still likeable. Boman Irani, as the unkempt grandpa, is dependable as always. From his conflicts to eccentricities, this actor can give lessons on how to remain in character. Ritvik Sahore is neither sugary-sweet nor cacophonously cranky like most child actors and comes up with an engaging act. Aakash Dabhade and Deepak Shirke as the duo in search of the missing Ferrari are hilarious. Seema Bhargav and Satyadeep Mishra are proficient. Paresh Rawal is impressive in his two-scene cameo. Overall, it is praiseworthy to watch with family. Source: GaramGossips
