Why Hollywood is finally telling a different kind of age-gap romance story

The ageist and sexist trope of the cougar, milf, or Mrs Robinson – a desperate older woman pursuing a relationship with a younger, less interested man – is being challenged by a spate of Hollywood movies pairing older women with younger men.

For generations, the idealised relationship on screen has been for an older man and a younger woman. This casting practice dates back to Hollywood’s silent era and mirrors global cultural norms. The real average age gap in the west, meanwhile, is much narrower than the silver screen would have you believe, standing at 2.2 years in the US.

Mirroring what we see in the cinema, however, research on heterosexual relationship preferences in Europe, published in December, indicated that men prefer relationships with younger women. And that preferred gap increases as men age. In contrast, women prefer a smaller age gap as they age. And in their 60s, they tend to prefer a slightly younger partner.

The history of Hollywood age gaps

Many Hollywood classics feature significant age gaps. Debbie Reynolds starred opposite a 40-year-old Gene Kelly when she was just 19 in Singin’ in the Rain (1952). Kim Novak was paired with 50-year-old James Stewart in Vertigo (1958) when she was just 25. And Maria Schneider was only 19 when she was coupled with Marlon Brando, then 49, for Last Tango in Paris (1972).

Reynolds and Schneider have both spoken about the abusive on-set power dynamics that ensued. Reynolds felt assaulted when Kelly “shoved his tongue” down her throat, and Schneider accused both Brando and director Bernardo Bertolucci of sexual assault.

More recent, and now notorious pairings, which demonstrate the ubiquity of double digit age differences include 30-year-old Catherine Zeta-Jones and 69-year-old Sean Connery in Entrapment (1990). A 27-year-old Eva Mendes paired with 47-year-old Denzel Washington in Training Day (2001). And 22-year-old Gemma Arterton as the romantic interest of 40-year-old Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace (2008).

Actor Laura Dern has reflected that the 20-year age gap between her and Sam Neill in Jurassic Park (1993), which was considered the norm in the 1990s, now feels “completely inappropriate”.

Flipping the script

Audiences are tiring of Hollywood’s habit of pairing younger stars with men old enough to be their fathers and are calling for change.

The casting of Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh in Oppenheimer (2023) received a backlash for the 20-year age gap between the two actors. This came particularly as the film featured lingering nudity of Pugh, and the age gap was ten years greater than the real life age gap between the characters they play.

When Hollywood has depicted an inversion of this age gap dynamic in the past, it’s generally been done to demonise the older woman. One of the most renowned examples is The Graduate (1967). The film starred Dustin Hoffman as a 21 year old at the mercy of a middle-aged seducer Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft). Mrs Robinson is at the periphery of the story and portrayed as a sad, fading beauty in competition with her daughter who eventually “wins” the man.

This depiction of a bitter older woman is being challenged by a surge of recent films that centre characters over 40. Babygirl (2025) stars 57-year-old Nicole Kidman as a CEO in a relationship with an intern 30 years her junior, defying gendered stereotypes and sexual power dynamics.

Similarly, Anne Hathaway, 41 in The Idea of You, falls for a 24-year-old pop star. Unlike the daughter in Mrs Robinson, who is perceived as the competition, her character’s daughter has her back and acknowledges the double standards women face when the age gap is this way around.

Even so, 2024 was referred to dismissively by some as “the year of the cougar” following the release of two Netflix romcoms, A Family Affair (again with Nicole Kidman, this time paired with 36-year-old Zac Efron) and Lonely Planet (with 57-year-old Laura Dern and 34-year-old Liam Hemsworth).

Despite this online mockery, the trend looks set to continue. The upcoming Bridget Jones sequel, Mad About the Boy, will show Bridget (played by Renée Zellweger who is now in her 50s) dating a 29-year-old Leo Woodall. Meanwhile I Want Your Sex, set to release in late 2025, will star Olivia Wilde, 40, opposite Cooper Hoffman, 21.

Women still only make up 23% of writers and directors in Hollywood. Interestingly, the recent films featuring older women and younger men couples have more women in key creative roles behind the scenes.

Lonely Planet and Babygirl were written and directed by women (Susannah Grant and Halina Reijn). A Family Affair and May December were written by women (Carrie Solomon and Samy Burch). And I Want Your Sex and Mad About the Boy have a mix of genders on their writing teams.

The need for more women to be involved in the creative decision-making to amplify women’s voices is crucial. Research shows that women make up only 35% of speaking parts and roles for women start to nose-dive post 30.

No wonder then that Reese Witherspoon, Amy Adams and Kerry Washington are just a few of the Hollywood actresses who have established production companies to tell stories that reflect the wide range of women’s experiences, sexual desires and vulnerabilities – and celebrate the complexity and diversity of their relationships. The Conversation

Rising star: Madhurima Tuli is on the roll

Launch Vehicle: I am playing Jessica in Cigarette Ki Tarah; she’s a bold, beautiful and confident girl from Goa. She hails from a very rich family, and is arrogant and vain about her beauty. But she is also very kind and endearing, and wants someone who would love her immensely. There are certain twists and turns as the story progresses, which I can’t reveal right now. Casting Coup: I actually did a film for an NGO in MP. There, I met an actor who introduced me to the makers of Cigarette Ki Tarah. Initially, I was a little doubtful about the prospect of the film,Cigarette Ki Tarah. But the story and music is very good. I love the songs. I did not to audition for the role, because the actor who introduced me to the makers, had seen me act. So, he had put in a good word for me. I hope that they have liked my work! It also depends on the reactions of the audience. Stepping Stone: Before Cigarette Ki Tarah, I was doing a Kannada film for Mukta Arts, which is going to release in January. There’s a song which needs to be recorded. Before films, I have done many advertisements like Godrej, Fiama di Wills and Carbonn, and have been the face of many brands. I have also done an international project called Lethal Commission which is on YouTube. It was a short film which premiered in Las Vegas. First Shot: I was confused and nervous, did not know what was happening around me when I gave my first shot. There were so many people around me. For me, it was a difficult because my films were taking time to release. Even my South film was delayed. So I was confused and wondering whether this film will release. But now I am very happy and excited about it. Lessons Learnt: Yes, I have learnt a lot from this film. The character portrays myriad emotions — arrogance, romance and spunk. Each scene has taught me something. The experience will definitely help me in my future projects. Matinee Idols: Madhuri Dixit — I have been a hardcore fan of hers since childhood. Future Projects: I can’t talk about it. My next project is going to release in February or March next year. The promotions will start either by December end or January. Source: Screen India

I think I am too young for a committed relationship right now and I just want to enjoy my life," says Sonam, who was in the capital to attend the India Today Mind Rocks Youth Summit 2012. The actress started her career in Bollywood with 2007 release "Saawariya" and went on to do films like "Delhi-6", "I Hate Luv Storys", "Aisha", "Mausam" and "Players". Sonam says she wants a love story like her parents Anil Kapoor and Sunita, who got married after 11 years of dating. "I think trust and respect is the most important thing in a relation. Katrina Kaif: Living the dream

In what once seemed a distant dream, Katrina Kaif gets emotional about getting to be a Yash Chopra heroine Since the time Katrina Kaif attended the premiere of Shah Rukh Khan-Preity Zinta-Rani Mukerji starrer Veer Zaara in 2004, her greatest aspiration was to work in a Yash Chopra film. However, it seemed like a far-fetched dream then as she was seen as an ‘outsider’ compounded by a language problem in Hindi. But having overcome the hurdles since, and making her place among the top three actresses in Bollywood, Katrina has fulfilled her biggest dream — of being a Yash Chopra heroine in his swan song Jab Tak Hain Jaan (JTHJ). Dressed casually in a loosely-fitted tee and a pair of denims, Katrina looks at home in Yash Raj studios in Mumbai. And in a tête-à-tête with Screen, shares her experience of working in JTHJ — her first with Yash Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan. Excerpts: Jab Tak Hai Jaan is your first film with Yash Chopra. What are your thoughts now that Yashji was not around when the film released? For me, there are so many poignant memories and things attached to Jab Tak... Even if you

I'm not an animal in the zoo: Preity

Actress Preity Zinta says she was greeted by "the shock of 40 camera flashes" when she arrived at the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport and ended up twisting her ankle due to the paparazzi's attempt to photograph her. "Sitting at home with a twisted ankle post the airport assault by photographers. First, I shoot all night and get on the plane and then get pushed," tweeted Preity, who landed in Mumbai on Sunday from Prague. The actress came back to the city after shooting in Prague for her debut production ‘Ishkq In Paris’. Photographers are said to have been stationed at the airport as Hollywood star Ashton Kutcher was expected to be there. However, the cameramen spotted Preity in a super casual look, wearing loose lowers and a T-shirt, her hair undone, and no make-up. Media has flashed pictures of Preity hiding her face behind her hand, hair and staff, but Preity says she wasn't "hiding". "Pushed and jumped on at the airport. It was raining, so I slipped. Wasn't hiding my face, was trying to recover from the shock of 40 camera flashes. And yes, in the end I was pissed off so then I definitely didn't want to show my face," she posted. The 37-year-old, whose car was damaged by paparazzi outside international talk show queen Oprah Winfrey's party in January, is angry. "If photographers ask me politely I will oblige, but next time I will either attack someone or then file a police complaint because THIS IS NOT FAIR. I am a human being not some animal in the ZOO! If my security would have pushed them, then news would report my staff assaulted the media," added Preity. She is only thankful that the shooting for ‘Ishkq In Paris’ is over. "Otherwise I'd be hopping around with a twisted ankle," she wrote, adding that she cared to give her side of the story on a social networking platform as "Every story has two sides". Men always get it wrong while buying gifts for women

Gift
Men rarely get it right when they buy gifts for their other half, a survey has revealed. The survey revealed that millions of men upset their ladies by buying underwear of wrong size, wrong colour or too sexy. They also buy toiletries, which women are never going to use or perfume they don’t like the smell of, a media report said. Another mistake that men commit is opting for kitchen utensils, which is a "blatant insult" for their other half. And women can even take offence if they are gifted exercise DVDs, feeling they are being criticised for being fat. "Buying presents for women is a minefield," John Starr, for Gift Card and Voucher Week, which commissioned the poll, said. "It looks like men should avoid buying anything for their partners to wear, all toiletries, anything for the house or kitchen or anything exercise related," he said. He said gift cards allowed women to shop for items that they really wanted. Source: Indian Express

You don’t go to Switzerland without Yash Chopra: SRK

SLAMtheTour_20Sep2014_(213)
Actor Shah Rukh Khan admits to an “emotional and mental” void in his life after father figure, late filmmaker Yash Chopra, passed away last week. So much so that the 46-year-old has cancelled the shoot of the last song of Chopra’s film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ), in his favourite outdoor location, Switzerland. “We don’t feel emotionally and mentally ready to go to Switzerland and shoot without Yash ji. You don’t go to Switzerland without Yash Chopra,” says the actor, who will now be a part of a grand farewell in ode to his guru with a lavish premiere of the film on November 12. What happens now to the swan song in Switzerland that was due to be filmed for JTHJ? We could not shoot for it as Yash ji was unwell. After he passed away, Karan (Johar) said, ‘Should I shoot it?’ But Adi (Aditya Chopra) said, ‘No we are not going to shoot it.’ If the song is not being shot by Mr Yash Chopra in Switzerland, then even I don’t want to shoot it. None of us wants to. The song will now be played in the background. We’ll use some scenes from what Yash ji’s already shot. What is the thought behind doing a gala premiere of the film? Shah Rukh kisses father-figure Yash Chopra on his last birthdayYash Chopra always released his films on Diwali (JTHJ releases on November 13), because his ideology was that it’s a festival of life and happiness. Hope it’s not seen in a wrong sense, but the fact that he’d been making films for the last 50 years, and just 10 days after he made his last film, he passes away — I think in a strange sense is the happiest a filmmaker can be. We as people who’ve experienced him should celebrate what a wonderful and happy life he had. We shall carry forward the reason he made films for, and that was to celebrate life. We are going to have this huge premiere, Insha Allah, on the 12th (of
November). To me it has become a little more than a film. That sensuous song Saans: MORE ON JAB TAK HAI JAAN: JTHJ: SRK-Katrina get groovy for Yash Chopra's swan song The foot tapping number is in contrast with the gloom that has set in after movie mogul Yash Chopra's demise. Jab Tak Hai Jaan's latest song Ishq Shava released on the same day the King of Romance passed away. And it trended heavily on Twitter all night. Unlike the romantic number Saans, which showed a scintillating chemistry between SRK and Katrina, Ishq Shava seems to be a peppy number. WATCH SONGJTHJ: Yash Chopra to direct last-ever scene: Yash Chopra prepares to say goodbye to direction with Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ), his assistant directors (who have worked with him for years) are busy designing a spectacular souvenir for the king of romance. They want this to be their special gift to their mentor. LAST-EVERJab Tak Hai Jaan: Yash Chopra to miss his last take? For the shoot of the last remaining song in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, director Yash Chopra had a grand vision: a sari-clad Katrina Kaif romancing Shah Rukh Khan in the lush meadows of the Swiss Alps. But unfortunately, his illness, caused by a bout of dengue, stymied the plan for the song, which would have reflected his trademark directorial style. UNFINISHED BUSINESSIs SRK's Challa from Jab Tak Hai Jaan inspired? AR Rahman's Challa song might be creating waves on the internet, but it has emerged that the song is not exactly err.. original. It is in fact inspired by Eagle-Eye Cherry's number Save Tonight from his album Desireless. The opening notes of Challa, where SRK is strumming the guitar, is uncanningly similar to Save Tonight's music. Challa is sung by Rabbi Sheirgill. Check Out The Videosis the best way of giving a tribute or the best way to mourn for Yash Chopra’s passing away and to celebrate the fact that he was a part of our lives. ‘I was never a part of this game’ A newspaper in Pakistan has reported that Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) will be banned there and the promos have been pulled off air. Are you aware? I never read the posts that come in newspapers anymore. I don’t know about this. You’ll have to ask the distributors. Your Diwali release clashes with Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardar. Does that worry you? I find this talk of competition within films and actors to be redundant. It’s actually the sensibility of outsiders who don’t know this business or who don’t feel the film. I feel the film. My film is not mathematics. I don’t believe in numbers. I know people think I’m a rich capitalist, a well-to do star. Ya, I’m a rockstar. But all that follows the belief that I’ll only do a film which my heart tells me to. I don’t need to know which other film is coming when my film is coming. With all humility and honesty, when my film comes, then only my film comes. I’m not being derogatory to anyone. But my film comes from the heart. If it’s just about the business, then I hope everyone else’s film does more business than mine. Trade experts are predicting collections of over Rs. 200 crore for JTHJ. What are your expectations? I’ll tell you two things. I am not a trade pundit. I am not an astrologer. I am an actor and that’s what makes me unpredictable. I hate numbers. It is so being tunnel visioned to be confined by numbers. I don’t even understand why people celebrate birthdays. You’re just getting older. It’s really stupid to be confined by numbers. Have you passed on the same outlook towards business of cinema to your kids? I’ll never be able to teach my son or daughter to be successful in the business of cinema. But they will know how to tell a story from the heart. My son has gone to study abroad. He looks a little educated now. I’ve been an outsider here. I was never a part of this game. Have you began working on the sequel to RA.One? Films like that take a little while. I am making three films already (Chennai Express, Happy New Year and A for Apple, B for Billi, C for Cutta). I need to take out some time, which I don’t see happening. It’s huge pre-production work to look into the VFX. It takes about a year. So not right now. Is it true that you have postoponed Chennai Express to avoid a clash with Salman Khan’s Brindavanam during Eid next year? Again, utter crap and nonsense of newspapers, with all gentleness and kindness. You are a very loyal ambassador when it comes to brands you endorse such as Tag Heuer that have become a part of your life through your trademark red glasses and watch. What keeps it going? I have been fortunate to have had employers who have had an association with me with the mindset of continuing it for a lifetime. Tag Heuer and Hyundai are among those. It has been close to 10 years with Tag now and they have never forced me to promote it in my films. It’s by default that I keep showing off pieces like this Tag Heuer Carrera India Racing Edition Chronograph that I am in Delhi to launch. When I need money, I work, otherwise I attend Tag functions (laughs).About the song: The song, we hear, was supposed to be as intensely romantic as Mere Dil Mein Aaj Kya Hai from Yash Chopra's Daag, the first film that Sr Chopra directed for his home banner Yash Raj Films in 1973. The song was to be shot in the snowfall capturing the same desperate romance between Shah Rukh and Katrina Kaif that Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore projected in Daag. For the shoot of the last remaining song in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, director Yash Chopra had a grand vision: a sari-clad Katrina Kaif romancing Shah Rukh Khan in the lush meadows of the Swiss Alps. But unfortunately, his illness and then his sudden death stymied the plan for the song, which would have reflected his trademark directorial style. It is now also believed that the film's stars Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma will work together to ensure that the film proves to be a fitting tribute to the Bollywood stalwart. Watch theSPOTTED: SRK-Anushka shoot in Ladakh Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma are currently shooting for the last stretch of Yash Chopra's untitled romantic film in Ladakh. Vivek Oberoi to do dark intense love story with Balaji

Actor Vivek Oberoi will be seen in filmmaker Ekta Kapoor's upcoming film, a dark intense love story. "I have signed it actually (with Balaji Telefilms). I don't think they have made an official announcement about it. All I can say is the film is a dark, intense and interesting love story. I can't talk much about it as it is too early," Vivek said. Vivek's recent release 'Kismat Luv Paisa Dilli' with Mallika Sherawat did not do well at the box office. However, the 36-year-old actor has a host of films in pipeline including 'Krrish 3' with Hrithik Roshan, 'Zilla Ghaziabad' alongside Sanjay Dutt, 'Sher' again with Dutt and 'Grand Masti', a sequel to the 2004 film 'Masti'. "I have nine films or so in hand. 'Jayanta Bhai Ki Love Story' is about a goon falling in love, 'Sher' is set in the 60s and is based in Gujarat. It is about gold smuggling. 'Zilla Ghaziabad' is out-an-out action film. In 'Krrish 3' I am playing a super villain," Vivek said. "I am doing one film with Balaji and another with Tips company. I feel I am doing good work. I am very much happy," he said. Vivek feels this is the happiest phase of his life professionally as well as personally. "I surely feel it is the happiest phase of my life. I have never been so mentally sorted and happy. I have my wife to thank for that. The day I got married I felt there is so much more to life," Vivek said. "Now that I am going to become a father, the excitement is at its highest. I want to take her out for a romantic holiday while she is expecting," he said. Vivek had earlier turned co-producer for 'Dekh Indian Circus' that had Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Tannishtha Chatterjee in the lead roles. Never paid attention to my popularity: Amitabh Bachchan

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who turned 70 today, says he never cared about his popularity but believed that one's outlook towards life matters the most. "Every human being will go through a phase when there are highs and lows. Everything that goes up also comes down. I don't think I am particularly different from anyone. We all have our highs and lows. It is just about what kind of attitude you have during the time," Bachchan said in an interview. "If you have success, you should know that it is going to be short lived and if you have lows and the courage to fight or an attempt to make a comeback, then all the best," he added. The Bollywood legend, who has appeared in over 180 films in his career spanning more than four decades, says his contemporary actors too are doing well in their capacity. "I never judge myself. I cannot say my contemporaries have been left behind me. That would be wrong. I have never paid attention to my popularity. People can write what they want to but it doesn't matter to me," he said. Bachchan said actors like Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna, Dharmendra and Rishi Kapoor are "very much active" and working in films. "Unfortunately, Shashi Kapoor is unwell or else I am sure he too would be active. "In fact, Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha have entered politics and are doing well... I feel I have been left behind by my contemporaries," he said. Bachchan, who acted only once with Dilip Kumar on screen- in 1982 hit 'Shakti', says the acting great is his idol. "Dilip saab and Waheedaji (Waheeda Rehman) are my favourite artists of all time and my idols even today. When it comes to the history of Indian cinema, I believe it can be easily divided into an era before Dilip Kumar, and after he joined films. There cannot be anyone like him," he said. Source: ScreenIndiaImage: flickr.com

Beauty and Brains

Hedy Lamarr, an Austrian-American actress (November 9, 1913 – January 19, 2000) who a major contract star of MGM's "Golden Age." Besides being known for her extraordinarily haunting beauty, not many people knew that Hedy was also an inventor! Yup. With composer George Antheil, Hedy co-invented an early technique for spread spectrum communications and frequency hopping necessary to wireless communication from the pre-computer age to the present day. According to writer Richard Rhodes, "She [Hedy] set aside one room in her home, had a drafting table installed with the proper lighting, and the proper
tools - had a whole wall in the room of engineering reference books." That, Rhodes said, was where she "invented." Hedy's other inventions included a better Kleenex box and a new traffic signal but neither invention went anywhere. But her idea for a radio-controlled torpedo guided by a signal that couldn't be intercepted ("frequency hopping") was patented. Hedy's notion of "frequency hopping" became the basis for most modern WiFi technology. "Today, frequency hopping is used with the wireless phones that we have in our homes, GPS, most military communication systems - it's very widely used," said Rhodes. "Hedy had quietly signed her patent over to the Navy, and left it at that. She gave the technology away, and never made a dime off of it," stated Rhodes. Oh well... at least we know that she neither was greedy nor boastful (two traits that are not so beautiful). And although Hedy may not have received any scientific awards for her inventions,Source: Critical Beauty

Mumbai: Late actor Rajesh Khanna had left behind a farewell message, which he specially recorded for his family, friends and fans recounting his cinematic journey from entering a talent hunt contestant to becoming Bollywood's first superstar. The message was played on his 'chautha' Saturday after the Hindi film phenomenon passed away on July 18. In the message, the veteran actor thanked all his fans and talked about his acting career, the talent contest which led to his entry into Bollywood. "Mere pyaare dosto, bhaiyo aur beheno, nostalgia mein rehene ki aadat nahi hai mujhe. Hamesha bhavishya ke baare mein hi sochna padtaa hain jo din guzar gaya hai, beet gaya hai, uska kya sochna... lekin jab jaane pehchane chehre anjaan se ek mehfil mein milte hai toh yaadein wapas tazaa ho jati hai," Khanna said in a recorded message. (Dear friends, I don't have a habit of dwelling on the past and living in nostalgia... we have to always look forward to the future... there is no point thinking about things that have passed by.... But when we meet familiar faces in unfamiliar circumstances... old memories come rushing back.) The 69-year-old iconic actor also spoke about how he began his career as a theatre artist when there was no godfather whom he could turn to. "My journey began with theatre. I owe my success to the stage. This theatre is where it all began when I joined the film industry. I had no godfather, no relatives or family that I could turn too. I came into the movies through the United Producers Filmfare Talent contest," the message said. Recollecting his initial days, Khanna had said he came into the movies through the United Producers Filmfare Talent contest where he was seated on a long table in presence of celeberated filmmakers like Bimal Roy, Shakti Samanta and many others. "They asked me-- we had sent you a dialogue, did you memorise it? I was sitting in front of the table where they were seated and felt I was undergoing a courtmartial. I thought they would take a gun and fire at me." Khanna also spoke about the dialogue which made his life. "Mujhko yaaron maaf karna...Haan main kalakaar hun, haan main kalaakar hun, kya karoge meri kahaani sunkar..." (Yes I am an artist, yes I am artist, why would you want to hear my story...), the message said. Khanna thanked everyone saying in the end. "Doston aap ka ek hissedar mein bhi hu.. aur jaise maine pehli bhi kaha ki.. aap apna kimti waqt nikalkar, aap ka yeh pyaar tha ki aap majood hue aur itni bhaari sankhya mein...main yehi kahunga ki bahut-bahut shukriya, thank you aur mera bahut-bahut salaam." (Friends, I am a part of you, and as I said earlier, I am grateful that you all took time out for me...It was your love that you came to watch my films. I'm grateful, thank you.) The legend passed away at his residence 'Aashirwad' in suburban Bandra on July 18.Source: Financial Express

Women not saved first in ship disasters

The Titanic disaster, which occurred 100 years ago this week, was a rare exception.Chin: A new study suggests that the belief that women and children are first to be saved when ships sink is largely a myth, the BBC reported. Analysis of survivors from 18 maritime disasters shows that women have a distinct survival disadvantage, say researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden. The report says captains and crew have a significantly higher survival rate. The Titanic disaster, which occurred 100 years ago this week, was a rare exception because the captain threatened to shoot those who disobeyed, the reports concludes., Source: Chin.org.cn

Getting to know Miss World New Zealand 2012 Collette Lochore

COLLETTE LOCHORE (18, 181 cm, Auckland) was crowned Miss World New Zealand 2012 at the Alexandra Park Tasman Room Fuction Centre in Auckland on April 28, beating 11 contestants. She will represent New Zealand in Miss World 2012 pageant to be held in Ordos, Inner Mongolia on 18th August, 2012. Special thanks to Miss World New Zealand director Rose Foulger for assisting with the interview. How does it feel to represent New Zealand in Miss World 2012? It is a surreal feeling that fills me with humility and honour. It is a dream come true to be a part of Miss World and represent not only NZ, but myself and have the opportunity to be an ambassador for the World. What three adjectives

would your friends use to describe you? Unique. Ambitious. Inspiring. What is your best quality? Your worst quality? My best quality are my communication skills and my ability to make everyone feel comfortable. My compassion, consideration for others and humorous personality allow people to feel included and at ease. What is your best quality? Your worst quality? My best quality is sometimes my worst quality. I always want to do my very best with whatever I do, and I can sometimes be too hard on myself. Sometimes it’s good to try and look at yourself with an outside perspective, and realise “this is good enough”, but other times it is also good to just keep searching for that something special to make it just right. My worst quality is that I am a little impatient at times! I always like to get things done and I don't 'fluff around'! I work quickly so when things take longer than they should I get a impatient! However, I have definitely got better. As my father used to say always "patience is a virtue!" If there's anything about yourself that you would like to change, what would it be and why?  I am very happy with who I am and if one can't learn to love what one has and be who one is, one will never be satisfied. I always steer clear of "If only I...." If I could change anything it would be that I wish I could be stronger with resisting the temptations of sweet and fattening food! What do you like to do for fun? I love performing! I love being on stage, speaking, doing drama, acting, singing (in the shower and in the car!) and also dancing. Going out for dinner or to a music gig or festival is something I really enjoy. I also really enjoy meeting new people and learning about others and what interesting things or

stories they have to tell! If you were to make a time capsule to represent life today, what would you put in it? Photos of my beautiful family. Their support in this journey has brought us all so much closer and they are a huge part of my life! I would also include a video of the Variety children performing and at the rehearsals we have each week. They are such special children with incredible talent! If I could capture the emotion of complete happiness and contentment I would seal it in a jar and put that in too! Name one living person that inspires you and why? There is one girl in particular, a Variety child whose name is Hannah. She is so happy, lovely and warm hearted and she inspires me to keep doing what I am doing! She is very enjoyable to teach and to be around and it inspires me to see that I am inspiring her and many others too. When I make them laugh or when they do an amazing performance it makes me feel so inspired to do more and challenge myself to help and involve myself further. Hannah is a beautiful singer, actor, dancer and person. What do you think about cosmetic surgery in a pageant competition? I wish and would hope every woman involved in pageants would feel confident and comfortable enough with themselves to feel as though they did not need cosmetic surgery.I think that woman who are confident and happy with themselves radiate true beauty and I feel this is much more physically attractive than what any cosmetic surgery can do. In saying that, I do not look down on anyone who has done it because if it is what makes them happy then I am happy for them but I would hope that they feel content with what they have been given. Personally, I would not submit to cosmetic surgery even if it would enhance certain features, I would hope the judges would want someone naturally beautiful, inside and out who others can look up to. What does a woman of substance mean to you? To me when I read "a woman with substance" I immediately think about a woman with a strong and complete personality! I think of characteristics such as confidence, strong minded, influential, positive and enjoyable to be around! Someone who is independent, soulful and an elite role model who has strong values and morals. Someone who is humorous and understanding! Overall, a woman with substance, to me, is someone who has an overall beautiful and inspiring personality! How does beauty pageants promote equality between sexes? Firstly we hold pageants for men too, for example "Mr World NZ" so we can embrace and celebrate like-minded men! I feel with pageants there is respect for both genders. We have male judges, choreographers, managers, mentors and audience members who appreciate the pageants and who see more than the bikini section! Pageants both celebrate and are celebrated by both sexes and I feel this creates equality through mutual respect. What is your position on same-sex marriage? Personally I support same-sex marriage 100%. Everyone deserves a full, happy life and the opportunity to do what makes them feel happy. I do not judge any same-sex relationships and if anything, I embrace it because I think it is very inspiring that people are comfortable with who they are!

What bothers you the most about what is happening in the world today and why? There is so much in this world that bothers me and when I think about it truly gets me quite down because I wish I could do more to make a difference, such as the environment and its sustainability, the economy, human rights, diseases (both physically and mental), animal rights, etc! There's unfortunately a lot of negativity in this world and a lot of wrong doings. What bothers me the most is probably that some people don’t care about these horrific issues. People think “I can’t do anything about it so why should I care” which bothers me tremendously. This bothers me because I don’t understand how people don’t feel compelled to help or do something by these issues even if they are not directly affecting them. If everyone thought “how can I help” and “what can I do” the world would be a much better place. If you showed me around New Zealand where would you take me and why? The first place I would take you to would be to my grandparents for a home cooked roast and I assure you, you will instantly feel at home and comfortable! I would then take you to a place called Rotorua which is about a 3 hour drive from the main city, Auckland. The reason for that is because it is filled with so much Maori culture and history that still interests me even after my 10th visit! You would learn more about NZ in a way that is interesting and fun and see beautiful landmarks such as significant NZ volcanoes, lakes, mud pools etc! Also, there is so much to do in Rotorua such as the luge, mini-golfing, the zorb, motor biking, lake sailing etc! How are you preparing for the Miss World 2012 competition? I am thoroughly organised so I am constantly creating lists and action plans to ensure I am ready by the time I get on the plane to leave! Apart from making sure I physically have everything I need, I am staying positive and relaxed; I am very excited for what is to come! All I can do is be myself, enjoy the experience and do the best I can and everything will fall into place. You can't prepare being yourself! Why do you want to become Miss World 2012? I want to become Miss World 2012 because I know I have exactly what it takes to not only be an amazing ambassador for the world, but a remembered and inspiring one too. To be able to make a difference on such a large scale inspires me and my dream is to be able to do this full time. I want to work with and for the world to create positive change by taking action. The title holder of Miss World has this unique opportunity to do this. Another reason is that this title is so appealing to me and would be the highest of all privileges I feel possible, bringing far more than the visible rewards. I want to make positive change and to be able to embrace so many countries, peoples, ways of life and find a way of bringing all of these together as one, is something you can only dream of. Another reason that is motivating me too is the fact that New Zealand is a country that unfortunately does not embrace beauty pageants as much as other countries do. If I were to win and be the first New Zealander to win this remarkable title, I feel New Zealander's would finally sit up and take notice of the amazing work Miss World does. The Miss World NZ pageant would gain the recognition it deserves and support would be increased. Within my title of Miss World NZ 2012 one of my goals is to increase the awareness and most importantly the understanding of Miss World and its charitable aims. It is a difficult goal to be sure but if I was to be so lucky to prove I have what it takes and gain the title of Miss World, New Zealand might finally start to understand just how special what Miss World Organisation does. How do you see yourself five years from now? I see myself as a past Miss World title holder who is continuing to work with and for charities and is heavily involved with pageants. I see myself as a well-recognised international positive public figure. To be able to continue with my Drama work and help children and young adults with confidence development and life

A Kiss from a Strange Girl Saved a Suicide Boy's Life in Shenzhen China

By : cheng ming You must have heard of stories that someone falls in love at a kiss, but what about saving one's life at a kiss? It is reported that several days ago, such a scene just happened in the crowd, on a pedestrian overpass in Shenzhen, China, which was breathtaking and romantic. The videos of the scene on the net caused greatly attention, and the story's heroine, Liu Wenxiu, also showed up. On June 11, a boy stood at the edge of the overpass and claimed to kill himself with a knife on his neck. The crowds tried to discourage but failed. Then a girl appeared. The boy was only 16 years old and lost his mother in his childhood. Then his father married another woman, who treated him so bad, took all of his father's money and ran away. He couldn't help feeling homeless. Liu said that she ever felt hopeless, like the boy did, but had come through. And she hoped the boy could cheer up. Hence, she decided to pull him back. The police stopped her to get close as the boy was holding a sharp knife. Desperate for saving a life, she lied that she is the boy's girlfriend, which made her admitted to get close enough to talk face to face with the boy. While listening to the boy's story, she was reminded her own personal life and she couldn't help crying. Then she unexpectedly kissed the boy's lips to help the boy regain confidence in life. Deepika plays Veronica with mouthing some bold dialogues in Cocktail

GaramGossips: Deepika Padukone returns with "Cocktail" and clarifies that both her character in the upcoming movie and the theme of the movie are different from what people saw in her 2009 hit "love Aaj Kal". The doubts about the resemblance between the two movies and her character arose after the first promos of "Cocktail" came out! She has teamed up with Saif Ali Khan in "Cocktail", which is written by Imtiaz Ali and directed by Homi Adajania. Model Diana Penty also features in it. "The minute people see Saif and me together, they will think about 'love Aaj Kal'. Yes, of course, Imtiaz has written the script, but it is directed by Homi Adajania who had previously made 'Being Cyrus'," Deepika said journalists here Wednesday. "Yes, it is a love story, but it is also about friendship, betrayal, fun and trust. So I think in terms of the film, it is very, very different," she insisted. The promos show Deepika, who plays Veronica in the movie, mouthing some bold dialogues. She disclosed, "I am not the film's writer. The dialogues were written based on the character that I am playing. Veronica is a very confident girl. She is very self-assured."  Why did she she choose to play Veronica? " 'love Aaj Kal' was a very different role for me. In this film, I was offered both the roles. My producer Dino (Dinesh Vijan) was kind enough to offer me both the roles. He said that you choose which one you want. I took it as a challenge and Imtiaz (Ali) also suggested to me that since Meera from 'love Aaj Kal' is so similar to the other character in the film, it would be interesting for me to play Veronica," told the 26-year-old. "I am so glad I went with that because when the trailer released two days ago, the response has been fantastic. What people are also reacting to is the fact that they have not seen me play something like this or look like this on-screen," she further added. "Cocktail" is scheduled for a July 13 release. Source: GaramGossips

Kareena's got a great sense of humour: Kajol

We are Family
The phrase "a rare talent" describes Kajol to a tee. In her case, it shows: there's a zest and verve to her work that not only suits her, but clearly suits her fans as well. It's a rare talent who finds herself at the zenith of her popularity at the age when Indian actresses have either vanquished in the oblivion or have stopped getting the main lead offers. Given the traditional paucity of fine roles for more mature women, this is proof positive that Kajol's talent can often turn manure into gold-dust. She may not have earned the tag of 'The highest paid actress' today but everyone recognises that a Kajol movie will be worth its weight in gold and worth an investment. Everyone knows this about Kajol: that the mantle of the most acclaimed film actress of our time could not be worn with such grace and humility. But everyone already knows that. What people don't know is her kindness, her collaborative nature and her great humour. It is however, these unknown things which Kajol brings to her matchless performance. So much so that you forget being her co-actor and stand in one tight corner observing the magic she's been spreading on the celluloid since 1992. Here is a take from the woman who can fittingly be described as 'seamless'. Siddharth wasn't the only one who gave us suggestions: Well that is not true. Altogether, there were other members in the crew as well; I was not the only one. If you are dealing with children in your real life, to an extent it helps you play a parent. You get the hang of the body language; you know how moms react, so your job gets slightly easy. Well, inputs can come from anyone and you needn't really have a family to visualize something. So yes, we did have our fair share of brainstorming as any other film. Ajay and I never talk work at home No, we don't inherently talk shop at home. We leave our work back on the sets. Arjun was a good reel life husband: He was very accommodating. Arjun is a very nice person and a thorough gentleman. He was a good husband on the sets (laughs). He is a parent in real life too but I didn't get a chance to sit down with him and discuss about parenting. I didn't think it was needed to help the film. We both were natural in the film just like off it, as we both know what goes in the making to be a parent. I haven't got Elvis Presley out of his grave, have I? Of course I have danced, and not just on 'Jailhouse Rock' but on quite a few numbers too. I'm a huge Elvis fan, grew up on rock n roll. I loved that retro era and listen to it a lot even today in my car. Kareena's got a great sense of humour:  Lethal or not I can't say. We have not killed each other (laughs); in fact we could have in this film as per the script's demand. On a serious note, now she is a delight to work with, we had awesome fun and she has a sense of humour which helps when you work long hours. I don't understand why people compare me with other actresses: Kareena is undoubtedly a talented girl and very hardworking too. In fact she has come a long way from K3G. Kareena has matured as a person and a professional. I think it would be unfair to draw comparisons as it was a different era, the scripts she and I have been offered are all very different so I don't see a fulcrum to hinge the comparison on. The little girl reminded me of Nysa a lot: The kids were fabulous, brimming with energy and very smart. They were all well behaved and an absolute fun. The girl who plays my youngest child in the film reminded me of Nysa in a strange way. I wish Karan had merchandised We Are Family tissue rolls: I hope realms and rolls of it (laughs). In fact Karan should have merchandised it. Imagine We Are Family branded tissue rolls? We Are Family will transcend beyond Stepmom: It is very different. After all it is an Indian product, largely for the Indian diaspora. The premise of the film is Stepmom but it is smartly Indianized with Indian values and at the same time it is very contemporary. I quite believe that We Are Family will transcend beyond stepmom and carve its own identity. I don't know how much of Karan's inputs were there in scripting the film: I really would not know that as I got a readymade bound script to read. Honestly, I really don't know what went into weaving it. I'm sure Siddharth will be able to give you better inputs on this one. Karan was obviously involved in the capacity of a producer but he has a strong team in place now so he did not even need to frequent the sets. I play a mother, and that is the only common thread in MNIK and WAF: Well, I can't even remotely compare both the films and my characters. They are absolutely different story lines, different situations and individuals; of course the only common thread is that the woman in My Name Is Khan had a kid and in We Are Family has kids. I am open to new scripts and new directors:  I have always been open to new talent, but of course I need the right script in hand and somewhere down the line, there has to be one function in the unit which would be experienced to pad up the newcomer or else it is difficult to get the right product. A certain amount of strength is required in the form of experience for good work, which should reflect somewhere in the project. I have worked with so many new directors in my career. So the fact remains that I am open. But the script should sweep me off my feet and of course it should come to me at the right time. Source: Indian Express
