Mona Lisa on ‘Zindagi Ka U-Turn’: This project felt like a turning point in my career

(Photo: PR) IANS

Mumbai,  (IANS) Actress Mona Lisa, who is stepping into a bold new chapter with the short drama, ‘Zindagi Ka U-Turn’ has called the short micro-drama “a turning point” in her career.

Reflecting on her journey with ‘Zindagi Ka U-Turn’, Mona Lisa shared, “I had been wanting to do a vertical series, so when the call came, I instantly knew I wanted to take it up. I hadn’t explored this format before, and I think it’s the next big trend. Everyone has a mobile phone, and people love watching quick, engaging content while commuting or waiting somewhere.”

She added: Short micro-dramas are fascinating because they grab your attention immediately. I even enjoy watching them myself!”

In the upcoming Pocket TV’s show, Mona Lisa takes on the role of Sonam Verma, an ambitious wife at the peak of her career, a woman who owns every room she walks into.

The series follows the story of a middle-aged street vendor whose world shatters after his wife’s betrayal, until fate takes a shocking turn when he suddenly inherits an empire worth billions.

She added: “This project felt like a turning point in my career, not only because I got to perform a very different character, but also because the story itself was so gripping. The moment people start watching Zindagi Ka U-Turn, even for 30 or 60 seconds, they’ll find themselves hooked. It’s full of twists and turns.”

The actress said that everything just fell into place so positively that saying yes felt natural.

“Overall, my experience was amazing. After having done everything from films to television serials and reality shows, this felt like exploring a completely new genre. The five-day shoot was truly memorable for me; after all, the first experience always holds a special place.”

Speaking about her character and how it is different, Mona Lisa said: “In my career, I’ve always tried to take on varied characters. Then, when I moved to television, I entered a totally different space, even playing a supernatural role.”

But this one is something she has never done before.

“In this story, my character is arrogant and shares a tumultuous relationship with her husband. While playing this character, I actually felt, Oh my God, I’m nothing like this in real life! But that’s the beauty of being an actor, getting to live lives so unlike your own. I feel grateful to have had this opportunity.”

“My director and creative team guided me beautifully, explaining every detail of the story. Later, they even told me they hadn’t expected me to perform the role with such conviction, because it’s always a challenge to portray something that’s the complete opposite of your real self.”

“So yes, this was a challenge for me, and I’m thrilled I could take it on. I always look for new roles, and Pocket TV has given me exactly that. I’m super excited and super happy.”

Speaking about doing any preparations for this role, Mona Lisa shared that the main preparation was to bring out her arrogance and dominating nature, especially towards her husband.

“During the script reading, my director, Naveen ji, guided me in understanding the tone; he wanted it loud and assertive. I built that personality in my mind and practised embodying her attitude.”She further added that her co-actor Ruslaan Mumtaz, who plays her husband Raghav, is shown as a very simple man, “while I play this sophisticated, dominating woman. That contrast helped me immensely in performing the scenes. The script itself was so strong and engaging that it made my performance flow naturally.” Mona Lisa on ‘Zindagi Ka U-Turn’: This project felt like a turning point in my career | MorungExpress | morungexpress.com

Created by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy, and directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, the 8-episode series offers a contemporary take on the lives of a financially struggling royal family in India.

Plot:

The narrative centers around the royal family of Morpur, whose fortunes have dwindled in modern times. Their ancestral palace, once a symbol of grandeur, is now a financial burden. An unexpected turn of events occurs when the young and somewhat entitled heir, Yuvaraj Aviraaj "Fizzy" Singh (Ishaan Khatter), reluctantly teams up with a determined and ambitious hospitality entrepreneur from Mumbai, Sophia Kanmani Shekhar (Bhumi Pednekar).

Sophia proposes a unique business venture: to revive the Motibagh Palace as a luxury "Royal B&B," allowing commoners to experience royal life firsthand and providing the much-needed income for the family. This collaboration brings together two contrasting worlds – the traditional opulence of royalty and the fast-paced, pragmatic world of a startup.

As Fizzy and Sophia work together, their initial clashes due to their starkly different backgrounds gradually give way to an undeniable romantic connection. However, their budding romance is complicated by their individual pasts, with the return of Sophia's ex, Kunal (Udit Arora), and Fizzy's ex, Ayesha (Nora Fatehi).

The series also explores the dynamics within the royal family, including the matriarch Rajmata Maji Saheba Bhagyashree Devi (Zeenat Aman), Fizzy's mother Maharani Padmaja "Paddy" Singh (Sakshi Tanwar) who is grappling with the loss of her husband and the family's financial woes, and his siblings Yuvaraj Digvijay "Diggy" Singh (Vihaan Samat) and Yuvarani Divyaranjini "Jinnie" Singh (Kavya Trehan). Disney+ Hotstar drops the trailer of Vikram Bhatt’s Bloody Ishq

Vikram Bhatt’s Bloody Ishq releases on July 26 on Disney+Hotstar. Photo: Kashish Hargunani

While evil is set to take control of all your emotions, will love hold everything together and stand strong against all fears and spirits? Sometimes, love itself can turn into a horrifying nightmare and you never know what is going to happen next. With this premise, directed by Vikram Bhatt and produced by Rakesh Juneja, Bloody Ishq, starring Avika Gor, is releasing on July 26 on Disney+Hotstar.

Avika said, “I feel very fortunate that Vikram-sir thought of me when he was visualizing this film. Horror is something I enjoy as a genre and to land this role was interesting and challenging. This is entirely different from my roles in 1920: Horrors of the Heart or Mansion 24. I’m really grateful that when it comes to strong, emotional female characters I’m considered, and it gave me this great opportunity to work with the Bhatts again. Neha’s character helped me explore my inner abilities as an actor and I thoroughly enjoyed working with Disney+ Hotstar.”

Director Vikram Bhatt added, “It may be hard to believe me, but I am scared of watching horror films, even though I absolutely enjoy making them for the viewers. I had been wanting to make a horror love story for the longest and when I spoke to Bhatt-saab about it, without a second thought, he jumped in and then Bloody Ishq happened. I wanted to retain some elements of a horror film, like a dark setup, ghosts and spirits, while also adding my own twists to the tale and giving it a fresh mix of a love story, suspense and horror. Avika Gor is one of the most talented actors in the industry and after 1920: Horrors of the Heart, I just knew I had to have her in Bloody Ishq and she has outdone herself.”

Sharing his views, writer Mahesh Bhatt said, “It is always great to create new films with Vikram, as our vision is very similar and we are always on the same page when it comes to giving the audiences what they would love to watch. Bloody Ishq is a one-of-a-kind gripping story that will keep the viewers thinking about the film even when the film is over. We received constant support from Disney+Hotstar, which made working with them a pleasurable experience. A gripping storyline, unexpected twists and horrors that will constantly haunt, Bloody Ishq has all this and more and I am confident that Disney+Hotstar’s audience will definitely enjoy the film.”

Jeniffer Piccinato, Shyam Kishore, Vardhan Puri and Manmeet Singh Sawhney are also in the cast. Disney+ Hotstar drops the trailer of Vikram Bhatt’s Bloody Ishq

Web Series 2024: The Best, Worst, Good, Bad, and In-Between!

Manisha Koirala in Heeramandi, one of the very best web series of this year. Photo: Trailer Video Grab

In web series in Hindi, it is a given that the action / thriller genre works the best. And 2024’s first half was no different.

In the non-action genre, there were principally two comedy “players”—the third season of Panchayat and the fourth season of Gullak. Both these respectively rural and small-town (if we take Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh as one!) dramas aimed at slice-of-life humor differently: Panchayat chose to continue the story and add dirty politics to it in the shape of a nasty politician, while the latter series, as always, concentrated on a nuclear family and its trials, celebrations and tribulations.
Gullak 4 was another high. Photo: Trailer Video Grab

The fun is that both came from the same production company, TVF or The Viral Fever, which has also done many short series. The writing in Gullak was far better, while many things in Panchayat 3 seemed forced, fake or false. Admittedly, Panchayat 3 was not as bad as Panchayat 2 was, but it was not a patch on Season 1, which was an unalloyed delight. But Gullak 4 was a fitting culmination (as gathered from its last shot), though I hope for more seasons even if the original gullak (piggybank) is now broken.

One of the best in this six month phase was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web debut, Heeramandi. Made and designed with sheer passion and meticulousness and marked by some melodious music, the show justified its lavish presentation and ensemble cast. It also had excellent performances and storytelling besides the brilliance and sheen of the scale.

Love Storiyan, which featured some unusual real-life love stories, was another welcome brief series, while Sunflower 2 was as mediocre as it prequel and we do not know what gave the filmmakers the will and means to make this mediocre mélange of murder and mirth.

Another clichéd to the extreme saga was Rohit Shetty’s Indian Police Force, which was advertised, big-time, both as Sidharth Malhotra’s entry into web series (ditto the director’s) and also his addition to Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe. But it was another acute disappointment for me after his cinematic misadventure, Cirkus, in terms of quality. The makers claimed that the oh-so-routine show worked, but I believe that it was hype.

Other web dramas that did not go beyond below-par treatment of promising subjects included Karmma Calling. Inspector Rishi, Poacher (with a huge hype, pre- and post-release, due to its internationally well-known director-writer, Richie Mehta, co-producers and its worthy cause), Adrishyam—The Invisible Heroes and Buried Truth.

Reprehensible Trend

A very retrograde trend for OTT came from Disney+Hotstar, treating series like TV serials and releasing them in installments! I wonder how they could tolerate (in turn, like us exasperated viewers!) judgments in reviews just based on a few episodes.

One of the worst, Raisinghani Vs. Raisinghani, which I gave up after 8 episodes, went past at least the 26th mark, I am told. Lootere, a promising drama, also had to be abandoned that way, as also Bad Cop and Showtime. In fact, whenever this platform announces a new show, I get the jitters, because they began this reprehensible game last year! And so I hope their September show to come, Special Ops, now a cult classic franchise, also does not go that way. This is what the platform had done last year with Friday Film Works’ other release, The Freelancer as well!
Harsh Chhaya as Papaji, seen here with Dibyendu Bhattacharya, was stupendous in Undekhi 3. Photo: Trailer Video Grab

The crème-de-la-creme

Killer Soup, a dark double-role drama, Undekhi 3, the highly-anticipated and fabulous third season and the media-based The Broken News 2 joined Heeramandi for the top ratings. So did the latest season of Maharani.

Aarya 3, the culmination of the Sushmita Sen saga, and Ranneeti—Balakot & Beyond were the other highs. Not to forget the earlier-mentioned Gullak 4.

Obviously, these shows thus topped in the writing departments and direction too. And if I had to choose the performances, I would place (in no particular order) Sushmita Sen (Aarya 3), Shriya Pilgaonkar (The Broken News), Manisha Koirala and Sonakshi Sinha (Heeramandi), Harsh Chhaya (Undekhi), Amit Sial and Huma Qureshi (Maharani 3), and Anula Navlekar and Kani Kusruti in Killer Soup as top of the heap, along with Jameel Khan and Geetanjali Kulkarni in Gullak 4. Yes, 2024’s first half was, decidedly, a female-driven show. And three of the best names are top-rung film stars of their respective times.Web Series 2024: The Best, Worst, Good, Bad, and In-Between!

A big shout-out to the incredible cast, and my writer Chandan Kumar, the wizard with words, for crafting this fantastic script. The show is funny, quirky and a light watch, yet it also teaches you how to stay focused and objective in tough times.”“Being a part of this show has been an absolute honor for me, for it is because of Panchayat that today I am a household name. I’ve been extremely lucky to have actors such as Neena-ji, Raghubir-ji, Faisal and Chandan as my colleagues, which has helped me immensely to grow as an actor. Two months of lockdown: TV stars in crisis, ask colleagues not to take 'extreme steps'

MAY 25, 2020 MUMBAI : TV actors are reeling under the impact of the two-month lockdown, many combating financial stress and mental health issues, including depression and suicidal thoughts, as the wait for dues now continues beyond the 90-day industry norm and shootings are suspended or cancelled. I am so scared for all of us, TV actor Zaan Khan told PTI, his fears for himself and his colleagues exposing the grim reality of what many perceive as a glamour industry. Many actors, who work 12-15 hours a day to keep the daily soaps running, echoed his anxiety. The 90-day pay window was always tough but the lockdown, which came into effect two months ago on March 25, has made it impossible for many to stay on in an expensive city like Mumbai with EMIs, rents, food and other expenses to take care of. On May 15, their worries deepened when"Aadat Se Majboor" actor Manmeet Grewal hanged himself at his Mumbai home. The 32-year-old actor was going through a major financial crisis and was also in depression, said his friend and producer Manjit Singh Rajput. The added pressure of not being able to repay loans amid this (no work phase) got to him. His wife is completely shocked and devastated," Rajput told PTI. Zaan said a fellow actor from his show, Humari Bahu Silk, also contemplated suicide because of non-payment of dues. The cast and crew of the Zee TV show said they have been struggling to get their dues cleared for the show for almost a year. Zaan alleged that they were paid for only 15 days for working for seven months on the show, which went off air in November. Repeated requests to the makers to clear their dues have fallen on deaf ears, he claimed, adding that a co-star attempted to end her life. "She had called me, called her mother because she felt so helpless. She was under depression. The entire team is going through hell. We feel helpless. It's such a sad situation. I am so scared for all of us," Zaan told PTI. Actor Kirti Chaudhary, also part of the cast, said she had to leave Mumbai and return to Indore as she didn't have money to pay the rent, and the lockdown only made matters worse. "By the time the show got over in November, I had drained all my savings on travelling, rent, basic expenses. I was then offered other shows, but again there was the same problem: 90-day cycle "I switched to anchoring and did that right till March. That gave me instant money to survive. Then the lockdown was announced and I knew that now even this window will dry up. I had no option but to go back," she said. Amit Behl of the Cine and TV Artistes' Association (CINTAA) said industry associations, including the Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) and Federation ofWestern India Cine Employees (FWICE), have instructed producers and members to release payments and not follow the 90-day cycle in view of the COVID-19 crisis. "We have taken up the issue of 'Humari Bahu Silk' with Zee TV and they've promised that they'll be clearing the dues of the artistes and the technicians." With concern mounting after Manmeet's suicide, they have also started counselling sessions. "We have activated our zonal structures so that they start connecting with members in their geographical area and no one takes any extreme step out of anxiety, depression or stress," Behl added. Explaining how the payment structure works,IFTPC chairperson J D Majethia said there is a 60-90 day cycle for payments from advertisers to broadcasters to producers to artistes and technicians. There is a minimum gap of two-three months from when we start shooting and when our shows go on air. Plus, there is GST that producers pay in advance and shoot expenses plus monthly salaries, which makes the cost of production high when the show goes on air. The 90-day cycle is decided keeping in mind all these variables, including the fact that it takes months to sometimes break even. But not paying after 90 days is not acceptable. If there is an unforeseen circumstance, talk to your unit but don't hold on to payments, especially during these times, Majethia told PTI. Many in the small screen industry echoed him. Actor Nia Sharma, from the popular show "Jamai Raja", recently took to Instagram to highlight the plight of small screen actors following Manmeet's suicide. "I know many of my actor friends who haven't been paid since last year or more. With rents and EMIs mounting, work this year clearly being halted indefinitely, everyone's losing patience somewhere. "I'd just like to make a humble request on behalf of my fellow actors/friends and others that their dues be paid ASAP so that we're not waking up to more such suicide stories a few days or a month later," she posted. Aishwarya Sakhuja, who was seen in "Saas Bina Sasural", said many stars have raised concerns about the 90-day period of payment in the industry. "We have always had this 90-day period of credit, that's how the TV industry has been functioning. Savings are essential. It's important that every actor does this because it's an unstable profession. We go from one project to another," Aishwarya said. According to actor Sara Khan, it's extremely important for aspiring actors and even existing stars to not solely depend on their television careers and find other sources of income. Her colleague Sayantani Ghosh said these are tough times and it can be "difficult to survive without work" in a city like Mumbai but one must stay strong. "I would urge everyone to please hang on tight, please don't not give into substance abuse or hurting yourself. Please be positive, take help from friends and family if need be, but hang in there." The COVID-19 situation has led to the termination of many shows. Sony, for instance, terminated Isharon Isharon Mein, Beyhadh 2 and Patiala Babes, saying these shows could not shoot their logical end as work remains suspended for the foreseeable future. Similarly, Star Plus ended Nazar 2and Dil Jaise Dhadke Dhadakane Do.  Copyright © Jammu Links News. Source: Jammu Links News

China Movie Channel and HBO Asia announced on Monday in Beijing that new co-produced martial arts films – "Master of the White Crane Fist: Wong Yan-Lam" and "Master of the Nine Dragon Fist: Wong Ching-Ho" – will debut early next year on both platforms.

The two films are the latest installments in China Movie Channel's martial-arts movie series in partnership with HBO Asia. Previously they had cooperated on, "Master of the Drunken Fist: Beggar So" and "Master of the Shadow-less Kick: Wong Kei-Ying", winning good ratings and reviews after their debuts on China Home Cinema and HBO Asia simultaneously on Christmas Day in 2016.

This was also the first time Chinese and foreign TV networks have had simultaneous broadcasts, covering more than 20 countries and regions. During the Spring Festival of 2017, China Movie Channel, also known as CCTV-6, reaching more than 1.2 billion viewers, and HBO Asia's RED by HBO rebroadcast the two films simultaneously.

The two productions were broadcast later on HBO's Cinemax and the European channels of HBO later in 2017. They were also released on Apple's on-demand video service, numerous airline inflight entertainment service, and in Blu-ray and DVD versions.

The success of the first co-productions led to the continued cooperation between the two home entertainment giants. Zhang Ling, a top executive of China Movie Channel, told Monday's press conference in Beijing that the collaboration with HBO not only builds a new model of TV movies for foreign networks, but also is a powerful implement for Chinese culture to be spread across the world.

Guo Jianyong directed "Master of the White Crane Fist: Wong Yan-Lam", which tells how kung fu master Wong disguises himself and cracks down on an opium-trafficking gang. The Si Xiaodong-directed "Master of the Nine Dragon Fist: Wong Ching-Ho" relates how the Nine Dragon Fist master turns enemies into friends and leads local martial arts heroes in Guangzhou to fight illegal British opium dealers.

The producers said the two films show the world Chinese culture and martial arts morals and spirit.

"The global audience's demands for action films have risen to a higher level, I hope my new film could do better than the previous two," director Guo said.

Si added: "Martial art is a universal body language that is liked and accepted by foreign audiences. I hope to put more traditional Chinese cultural elements into the film production to allow more people know something about the essence of Chinese kung fu."

In this cooperation, the two parties said they continued to adhere to the principle of integrating international production resources, and focusing on efforts to perfect the productions rather than lavishing money on big movie stars and ostentation. "Master of the White Crane Fist: Wong Yan-Lam" and "Master of the Nine Dragon Fist: Wong Ching-Ho" will be released on China Movie Channel and HBO Asia on Feb. 20 and 21, 2019. Source: China.org.cn

Kapil Sharma moves Bombay HC against BMC notice asking to demolish his office

He had allegedly initiated internal changes within premises sans official permission from BMC.

Mumbai: Kapil Sharma has challenged the BMC’s decision to demolish supposedly illegal portions of his Versova office, by moving the Bombay high court.

Sharma, in his petition, claimed that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) notice was 'bad in law' and issued with 'malafide intentions'.

The actor-comedian had recently taken to twitter to sensationally reveal about a BMC official seeking a 5 lakh bribe from him in exchange for permission to construct the aforementioned office.

Kapil had tagged prime minister Narendra Modi’s twitter account, and had created quite a furore, until Maharshtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, intervened and promptly asked for details regarding the BMC official.

Following this, the BMC had claimed that the actor had flouted norms not only in his Versova office building but also at his apartment in suburban Goregaon.

On April 28 this year, the civic body had issued a notice to Sharma under section 351 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, claiming that certain constructions in the 18-storey residential building 'DLH Enclave' in Goregaon, in which the actor has a flat, were illegal and hence will have to be razed down.

Sharma had allegedly initiated internal changes within premises sans official permission from BMC, back in May, 2016.

The BMC had also issued a stop-work notice to Sharma for said changes, in July. An ultimatum of 24 hours had been given to the comedian to pull down illegal extensions.

This was followed by the BMC going ahead and demolishing segments in August. Source: The Asian Age
