Spice Girls Enjoy Holiday Get-Together

Spice-Girls-v01.jpg
The Spice Girls proved they are still best pals almost 20 years after they met by enjoying Christmas dinner together. The five-piece hooked up in 1994 when they were auditioning for a place in the band, and they later had a lengthy hiatus before reuniting in 2007. They re-grouped again this year to perform at the London Olympics Closing Ceremony, and the singers - Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, and Melanie Chisholm - got together earlier this month for a day of festive fun at Beckham's house in England, with all their children in tow. Bunton tells Britain's Hello! magazine, "Every year, Victoria does a traditional festive dinner just before Christmas and we get to hang out and catch up properly. The kids love it too and get on so well together, which is wonderful for us. (My son) Tate is similar in age to (Beckham's daughter) Harper, so it will be fun watching those two together. She's totally yummy." The Spice Girls aren't the only British pop group enjoying Christmas together - Girls Aloud descended on Cheryl Cole's home for a seasonal dinner. Nadine Coyle says, "It's gonna be a whole new experience," and Cole adds, "I got nominated (to cook) by all the girls." Photo Credits: Capitol Music Group, Source: Starpulse

She has spent £10,000 on surgery and outfits to look like her beloved dolls

Brizzleleo: Promotions girl Charlotte, 24, went under the knife to get a perfect nose like Barbie's and had her lips plumped. She also dyed her hair blonde, and spent all her spare cash on girlie outfits to complete the look. Charlotte said: "I told the clinic I loved Barbie and I'd love to have that look. It was really painful. "My face was bruised afterwards and it took a few weeks for the swelling to go down. "But when I took the bandages off it was well worth it. Then I dyed my hair blonde. It's completely changed my appearance and I think it looks pretty good. "What girl doesn't want to be like Barbie? I've got a few Sindys as well, but Barbie is much better looking." Charlotte has collected hundreds of dolls, which she keeps in a special room at her Manchester home. She said: "I must have spent thousands on Barbies and all their clothes. Some people may think it's a little weird, but I think it's great. "There are so many. I've got gym Barbie, tropical Barbie, Cinderella Barbie, Chinese New Year Barbie. There's a Barbie for every occasion, and I'd love to have them all" Charlotte got hooked after getting her first one aged three. She said: "Me and my sister would have massive Barbie weddings. I guess I've just never changed." Single Charlotte hopes to find a Ken of her own after splitting with her last boyfriend over her fixation. She admitted: "Boys don't like it that I love Barbie so much. But I don't mind. If the right man comes along he'll love me and my Barbies." Source: BrizzleleoDaily-Protein

Working for tribal welfare is her mission

Srikripa Raghunathan, a social work postgraduate from TISS is on a mission to find out what is causing acute anemia among the tribes of Gond, Oreon and Pandu of Jagannathpur, a remote area in Chhattisgarh. She spoke to Varsha Torgalkar about her quest to finding a solution. A Hyderabadi girl Srikripa Ragunathan has been trying to understand food consumption patterns of tribal people in the village Jagannathpur in Chhattisgarh who are suffering from malnutrition. She wants to come up with the solution to the health problems of these tribal folk.  What does your work involve? I had roamed around villages in Chhattisgarh for the first six months of this year. I have been staying in this village called Jagannathpur and have been trying to understand food consumption patterns of households here. Three major tribes- Gond, Oreon and Pandu inhabit this area. Most of the women here are anemic. I mingle and talk with them try to understand their daily food consumption pattern and timing is, choice of food – ingredients and method of cooking. Found any solutions yet?  I have been here for only six months. I am still an outsider so I am trying to build a rapport with them. I cannot simply put my ideas before them. First there is the need to understand their culture, thinking and habits. Next, I have to win their trust. Then only there can be a better interaction and we will be able to know the difficulties they are undergoing and bring out solution that are agreeable to them. We have to necessarily bring out solutions that are in line with their with their traditions or be good at convincing them to give up certain old ways of thinking and adopt new methods to get over their problems. Why did you choose this place? I have done my MA in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. I have got a two-year fellowship. As a part of the programme, I am working on this project. I was always keen to work in health sector in remote areas which is neglected in our country. I want to understand community health and the prominent and prevalent issues in this sector. I am keen on setting up a youth centre here. I am also making efforts to bring about government health service programmes to this area. Source: The Hans India

Just beat it

Human Beat Boxer, 16-year-old Raj Verma can produce sounds like that of drums, rhythm or electronic music using his lips, tongue and throat  When you hear the music it is indeed hard to make out that a human is producing various sounds from mouth and without using any musical instruments. That is human beat boxing. It is an art of producing sounds like that of drums, rhythm or electronic music using mouth, lips, tongue and voice. The collective process of beat boxing is sound imitation, singing and more. Beat boxing is related to hip hop genre and it first started in the 1980’s and has evolved since. A trained beat boxer can produce sounds like kick drums, reverse kick drums, snare drums, inward snare drums, Hi-hats, cymbals, rolls, scratching and bass Sounds. Hyderabad’s prodigal kid Raj Verma, who is just 16 years old, has already made a name for himself in the art of beat boxing and is creating ripples in the world of music here. He recently shared the stage with Shrikanth Sriram populary known as Shri and Bollywood fame Indian classical singer Gayatri Iyer-Ganjawala for an eclectic performance. The audience was awe struck with his performance in electro funky beat boxing style. “The collaboration with Shri was fantastic and he is a brilliant musician anybody would love to collaborate with,” Raj says. Raj has just completed his Inter first year from St.Mary’s Junior College (Yusufguda). He also participated in a human beat boxing competition conducted by the British Council in collaboration with Sony music in January this year. Participants came from all over India. There he met with other beat boxers and they formed a band—Voctronica. The band has eight members, five of them are beat boxers and three are vocalists. Raj is the only Hyderabadi in the band, while six are from Mumbai and one hails from Bengaluru. The band meets in Mumbai for gigs and is looking forward to make more music in future. “It is a very unique band in its own way. Other bands have instruments to create music but we create music by beat boxing. After joining the band I have learnt a lot and the experience is really great,”  He started learning beat boxing two years back after watching a video on the Internet about it and he gave it a shot. To date he has given over 80 performances. “I learnt beat boxing online from Youtube and various other websites. I practice nearly for two hours everyday,” he says. Raj says that anyone can learn beat boxing just they have to work on the vocals and enhance it. There are many websites about beat boxing; new learners can train themselves with the help of these websites. His future plan is to complete education and after studies he wants to be a professional musician.--Navin Pivhal  Source: The Hans India

I'm Kind Of A Weirdo, Creative Valley Girl Who Smokes Pot

Kristen Stewart
.Subscribe
Twilight star Kristen Stewart has a message for her critics - especially the ones who take issue with her sense of style on the red carpet: she hears you loud and clear and she doesn't care what you say about her. In a new interview for Vanity Fair magazine's July issue, the Snow White and the Huntsman star takes the opportunity to point out that how she photographs has nothing to do with her personality. "I have been criticized a lot for not looking perfect in every photograph," she tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Ingrid Sischy. "I get some serious sh-t about it. I'm not embarrassed about it. I'm proud of it. If I took perfect pictures all the time, the people standing in the room with me, or on the carpet, would think, 'What an actress!' 'What a faker!' That thought embarrasses me so much that I look like sh-t in half my photos, and I don't give a f--k. "What matters to me is that the people in the room leave and say, 'She was cool. She had a good time. She was honest.' I don't care about the voracious, starving sh-t eaters who want to turn truth into sh-t. (Not that you can say that in Vanity Fair!)" Even boyfriend and Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson defends her on the issue. "People have decided how they are going to perceive her. No matter how many times she smiles, they'll put in the one picture where she's not smiling," he says. Kristen's also a tomboy at heart and her red carpet looks may turn some critics off, but before she became famous dealing with her wardrobe was a lot simpler. "Look at a picture of me before I was 15. I am a boy. I wore my brother's clothes, dude! she says. "Not like I cared that much, but I remember being made fun of because I wasn't wearing Juicy jeans. I didn't even think about it. I wore my gym clothes. "But it's not like I didn't care that they made fun of me. It really bothered me, she adds. "I remember this girl in sixth grade looked at me in gym and was like, 'Oh my God! That's disgusting — you don't shave your legs!" She is more conscious of her fashion choices these days, though. "You can Google my name and one of the first things that comes up is images of me sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe with my ex-boyfriend and my dog. It was [taken] the day [Twilight] came out," she explains. "I was no one. I was a kid. I had just turned 18. "In [the tabloids] the next day it was like I was a delinquent slimy idiot, whereas I'm kind of a weirdo, creative Valley Girl who smokes pot. Big deal. But that changed my daily life instantly. I didn't go out in my underwear anymore." Read Kristen's full interview in the July issue of Vanity Fair magazine or at © 2012 Starpulse.com, Photo Credits: Mario Testino for Vanity Fair, Source: Starpulse

Phoenix Legend soars

China: The hot Chinese pop duo Phoenix Legend has fans from all strata of society and is fast gaining recognition overseas. Zeng Yi (R) and Ling Hua are members of the country's most popular pop duo. [China Daily] The music of Phoenix Legend, one of China's hottest pop music groups, has also reached the NBA. Their hit song from three years ago, Most Dazzling Ethnic Trend (Click to watch music video>>), was used by cheerleaders during a NBA Houston Rockets game in April 2012. "We have no idea how the song reached the United States," 32-year-old Phoenix Legend member Ling Hua says. The duo's other half is 33-year-old Zeng Yi. "Maybe we should thank Yao Mingbecause the NBA wants to attract more Chinese fans," Ling says. The song also became an Internet sensation after being remixed by fans across the world during the past several months. In fact, this is not the first time Phoenix Legend's songs have been heard internationally. Workout dance instructor Wang Guangcheng has been mixing the duo's songs to the beats of salsa, disco and hip-hop, and even took their songs to the US Zumba Convention in 2010 and 2011. Riding the wave, tFhe group is collaborating with Wang to release a new album in June, remixing their popular hits just for gyms. Phoenix Legend has sold more than 6 million albums in China since 2005, and 10 songs from their four albums have recorded 1 billion online hits. Tickets to their first concert in Beijing, which was held in October 2010, sold out within 15 days, prompting organizers to add a show. They repeated this success in 2011 with tickets gone within days. The duo's songs are popular among migrant and white-collar workers, children and retirees. Their songs also rank high in the must-play list of KTVs, restaurants and supermarkets. What's so special about Phoenix Legend? Fans say they like Zeng's rap and find Ling's high-pitched voice and folk style to be something special. Some have dubbed them "the saviors of the Chinese music industry". But there are also naysayers, who consider their music out of date and meaningless. "There are lots of people who listen to Phoenix Legend but are reluctant to admit it," Bi Hu, a fan of the duo, says. "They feel ashamed to listen to the group because it is popular among the masses, and some people don't want to be associated with songs, which appeal to those in the lower social strata. But I notice that the young and trendy still sing their songs at KTVs." The negative feedback does not bother the two singers. "Our goal is simple - to sing the songs well and have more people like them," Ling says. Zeng says: "Our music contains a lot of Chinese folk music elements, from the rhythms to the instruments. That's our distinctive style. It's wrong to say that the music is not good just because a migrant worker or a street cleaner sings it." Songwriter Zhang Chao is certain the group's success is sustainable. "That's because their music connects with the grassroots," the Guizhou province-based songwriter says. Zhang wrote three popular songs for the group, including Most Dazzling Ethnic Trend and Moonlight over the Lotus Pond. Before writing the songs, he conducted research on the most popular songs in China over the past two decades and concluded songs with folk elements always top the charts. "Moreover, unlike most pop songs which are about love and loss, the lyrics are refreshing and uplifting, while the rhythms are simple and easy to follow," Zhang says. Blending folk music with rap and hip-hop elements comes naturally to Ling and Zeng. Ling - who's from the Inner Mongolian autonomous region and whose full name is Yang Wei Ling Hua ("Clouds in the Sky") - grew up with folk songs and various traditional instruments. Zeng, who was born and bred in Yiyang, Hunan province, listened to a variety of music thanks to his parents, who love singing and dancing. When they met in 1998 in Guangdong's provincial capital Guangzhou, both had day jobs and sang at nightclubs after work. A year later, they formed a group called Cool Fire, singing mostly Korean and US pop songs. Ling recalls dying her hair bright red, while Zeng shaved himself bald. Both wore colorful and offbeat clothes to attract attention. Their rise to fame was almost accidental. Songwriter He Muyang heard Ling's voice on TV for the first time in 2003 and was determined to look her up. "Her high pitch is really impressive and rare," He says. "It was also rare in China to see a girl/boy group then." After He met the duo, he rewrote On the Moon, a sentimental song he penned in 1999. "It was tailor-made for them," He says. "I believe no one can sing it as well as the duo." Ling says: "It was unbelievable to have our own song at last. We spent months in the recording studio to achieve the best result. He is such a genius. He told us combining folk with modern music elements would give us our big break. We trust him." In 2004, the group signed a contract with Peacock Blue, one of the mainland's biggest record and music distribution companies. But the song didn't become a hit until 2005, after the group toured more than 20 universities in China and attracted students' interest. Timing was the key to success. It was about the same time that the craze to download cell phone ringtones escalated, giving the song another promotional avenue. By 2007, On the Moon had been downloaded more than 100 million times. Both Flying Freely and Moonlight over the Lotus Pond were equally well received. When Phoenix Legend first started, there was no proper plan to promote their music. Now, Ling's husband Xu Mingchao, a former music editor of a website, is in charge of promoting the duo's songs. With this arrangement, Phoenix Legend's unique music is set to soar higher not only domestically but also internationally.Source: China.org.cn

Following Maureen's death from a brain tumour in 2008, Kirsty channelled her grief into her passion for photography. She retreated behind the lens of her camera and created Wonderland, an ethereal fantasy world. The photographic series began as a small summer project but grew into an inspirational creative journey. 'Real life became a difficult place to deal with, and I found myself retreating further into an alternative existence through the portal of my camera,' said the artist. 'This escapism grew into the concept of creating an unexplained storybook without words, dedicated to her [my

mother], that would echo the fragments of the fairytales she read to me constantly as a child.' Kirsty, 36, who has a background in fashion and costume design, collaborated with hair and make-up artist Elbie Van Eeden. Both were in full time jobs so they spent evenings and weekends creating props, wigs, and setson a shoestring budget and shot in the woodlands surrounding Kirsty's home in Surrey. Kirsty developed a deep bond and respect for the locations in which she was working and strove, through her pictures, to 'remind others of their forgotten magic and beauty'. She became fascinated with pockets of wild flowers such as the bluebells that would appear for only a few brief weeks of the year. In some cases, she would wait a full 12

months so she could shoot costumes matched to the vivid colours of  nature. 'All the characters came to me in my dreams,' she explained, but she delighted in the chance to step into the scenes for real: 'after all, it's not often you get to stand beside an eight foot princess in the rain, or witness the dawn with a dancing circus girl on stilts!' The resulting images looked so hyper-real that it was assumed that they were created in Photoshop. Many people believed the photographs were shot all around the world, when in reality they were

taken in locations within short drives of  her Surrey home. So Kirsty began to write diary accounts and blog behind-the-scenes shots about the creation of each photograph. 'My aim was to portray time passing, an unsaid journey through four seasons, incorporating every colour in the rainbow. As things progressed, her costumes became more elaborate with the props and new characters often taking up to five months to create. 'The project blossomed into our own private playground,' she said. Her three year labour of love is now almost complete and there are plans for an exhibition and accompanying book: 'I just know that the day I see my mother’s name printed on the inside cover of the Wonderland book, it will feel like I have finally fulfilled my promise to myself and her precious memory.'
