Why the UK Film and TV Industry Must Prioritise Health and Safety

Beneath the lights and glamour of the film and television industry is a lingering problem that affects thousands of workers: a less-than-stellar health and safety record. Recent events and statistics have illuminated the urgent need for a fundamental shift in how the UK’s film and TV industry approaches the well-being of its cast and crew, with HR managers playing a pivotal role in this transformation.

Long Hours, High Risk of Accidents:

The film industry is no stranger to risky work-related activities, from daring stunts and eye-popping practical effects to the use of heavy machinery on set. But there’s another hazard lurking in the shadows: the gruelling hours that lead to drowsy driving and burnout.

It’s why the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union (BECTU) launched the Eyes Half Shut campaign — a movement pushing to cut down on those long work hours to boost safety and productivity while giving workers in the film and TV business a better work-life balance.

The Impact on Workers:

Behind every accident in a film or television production set are real people — hardworking individuals who deserve a safe and secure workplace. While actors and directors often grab the limelight, it’s crucial to remember the countless crew members who contribute to bringing our favourite shows and movies to life. These unsung heroes are often subjected to long hours, physically demanding tasks and precarious conditions.

The Looking Glass, a 2019 survey conducted by the Film and TV Charity, which involved over 9 thousand off-screen professionals in the UK, only 10% expressed that they believe the industry offers a mentally healthy work environment. Prioritising health and safety in this context goes hand-in-hand with fostering a culture of care. It involves establishing support systems and making resources available to help individuals cope with stress, combat fatigue, and address various mental health challenges.

HR managers in the UK film and TV industry play a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of their workforce. They must actively engage in the development and implementation of safety protocols, as well as foster a culture of well-being among all employees.

The Need for Change:

So, why does the UK film and TV industry need to pay more attention to health and safety? The answer is clear — because lives are at stake. It’s essential for the industry to prioritise the well-being of its workers, not only for ethical reasons but also for its own sustainability.

First and foremost, establishing and enforcing robust safety protocols is a moral imperative. Every worker deserves to return home safely to their families after a day’s work. HR managers should work in tandem with production teams to invest in training, equipment, and safety personnel to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. This includes adequate safety training for all crew members, especially those involved in stunts and special effects.

Furthermore, the financial impact of accidents and injuries in the industry is significant. Insurance premiums for UK film and TV productions can skyrocket in the wake of accidents, leading to increased production costs. Delays caused by injuries can result in budget overruns and potential legal disputes. By proactively addressing safety concerns, the industry can protect its bottom line.

It’s Time for a Cultural Shift:

To address these issues effectively, the UK film and TV industry must undergo a cultural shift. This means fostering an environment where workers feel safe reporting concerns without fear of retaliation. It also means promoting a culture of work-life balance and respect for the physical and mental well-being of everyone involved in production, with HR managers serving as advocates for these changes.Industry associations, unions, and guilds have a critical role to play in advocating for these changes. They can negotiate for better working conditions, safety standards, and mental health support as part of their collective bargaining agreements, with HR managers facilitating these discussions and ensuring their implementation.

Miss England finalist Melisa Raouf creates history, is first woman in pageant's history to compete without makeup

AUG 29, 2022 Beauty pageant and makeup artistry are almost synonymous because of obvious presentation reasons. But one woman has made history by reaching the finals of a national beauty pageant without any makeup. Melisa Raouf, 20, is a politics student from London. By deciding to appear barefaced in Miss England this year, she became the first woman in the contest's 94-year-old history to compete without any makeup. The contest, which is organised by Angie Beasly every year, is promoted to thousands of women around England in local media. While organisers of the contest did introduce a 'Bare Faced' round in the 2019 edition, never in its history has a woman gone without makeup throughout. But Melisa has now changed that. The 20-year-old said she decided to compete barefaced in a bid to promote inner beauty and challenge the beauty ideals that are promoted and perpetuated by media, advertisers and social media. "It means a lot to me as I feel many girls of different ages wear makeup because they feel pressured to do so. If one is happy in their own skin we should not be made to cover up our face with makeup. Our flaws make us who we are and that's what makes every individual unique," the sold The Independent. "I think people should love and embrace their flaws and blemishes, as we know real beauty lies within simplicity. I never felt I met beauty standards. I have recently accepted that I am beautiful in my own skin and that's why I decided to compete with no makeup," she added. Melisa's noteworthy appearance and demeanor have earned praise from people all over the world. It has also received a response from the contest's organiser. "This is the first time I've seen a contestant completely makeup-free competing in a semi-final and she said she felt empowered against all the other contestants," said Beasley. The 20-year-old will compete with other 40 women for the Miss England crown on October 17. Copyright © Jammu Links News Source: Jammu Links News

Gwen Stefani Says Being A Working Mom Can Be 'Overwhelming'

Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani often misses the chance to appear at her clothing line's runway shows because New York Fashion Week clashes with her children's school timetable. The No Doubt star has her own designer collection, L.A.M.B., which is showcased at the famous Manhattan style festival, but Stefani admits she regularly skips the event because she needs to be around to take care of her two sons, Kingston, six, and Zuma, four. She tells Britain's Elle magazine, "I've missed the last couple of fashion weeks because of school. I can't leave the kids, I can't miss the first week of kindergarten. I just can't." Stefani goes on to admit she struggles to find the perfect balance between work and parenthood, adding, "Being a mom is hard, I think a lot of working moms feel that way. (They want) to have time to be themselves as well but it's really hard, there's a price to pay." "When you first have a baby your life doesn't change. I mean, you have a little less sleep and you drag these cuddly things around you and it's just amazing. But you

Spice Girls Enjoy Holiday Get-Together

Spice-Girls-v01.jpg
The Spice Girls proved they are still best pals almost 20 years after they met by enjoying Christmas dinner together. The five-piece hooked up in 1994 when they were auditioning for a place in the band, and they later had a lengthy hiatus before reuniting in 2007. They re-grouped again this year to perform at the London Olympics Closing Ceremony, and the singers - Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, and Melanie Chisholm - got together earlier this month for a day of festive fun at Beckham's house in England, with all their children in tow. Bunton tells Britain's Hello! magazine, "Every year, Victoria does a traditional festive dinner just before Christmas and we get to hang out and catch up properly. The kids love it too and get on so well together, which is wonderful for us. (My son) Tate is similar in age to (Beckham's daughter) Harper, so it will be fun watching those two together. She's totally yummy." The Spice Girls aren't the only British pop group enjoying Christmas together - Girls Aloud descended on Cheryl Cole's home for a seasonal dinner. Nadine Coyle says, "It's gonna be a whole new experience," and Cole adds, "I got nominated (to cook) by all the girls." Photo Credits: Capitol Music Group, Source: Starpulse

Olga Kurylenko: 'I Believe In Miracles'

Olga Kurylenko
Former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko has credited a "miracle" meeting with launching her show business career. The actress grew up in poverty in Soviet Russia and shared a tiny apartment with several members of her extended family and her single mother. The beauty was discovered by a model scout at a train station in her early teens, and she is adamant it was fate which meant she stepped onto the platform at that precise time on her first ever trip away from her hometown. She tells Britain's Live magazine, "I believe in miracles. At the age of 13 I was on holiday in Moscow with my mother. It was the only trip I took in my whole childhood. We stepped off a metro train and were approached by a talent scout who told me that she wanted to sign me to her modeling agency." "That was the start of everything for me. If I hadn't been a model I couldn't have become a movie actress. If I'd stepped off the train a minute later, maybe none of this would have happened." "To me, that chance meeting was a miracle, like something from a fairytale." Photo Credits: PR Photos, Source: Starpulse.com

British men poor at flirting

women are bat sh*t crazy!
British men are particularly bad at flirting and most are unable to tell when a woman is being flirtatious, a new study has found. According to statistics gathered by social anthropologist Jean Smith, flirting is all too rare in Britain and when it does take place, it's likely to fail. Smith spent more than a decade looking at how men and women interact and recently completed a four-country comparison, the 'Daily Mail' reported. She found that flirting was rare in Britain and people just give up easily and went home; New Yorkers get right down to business; Parisians take refuge in ornate but time-proven ritual. She said that Britain's problems start with men. Protocol dictates that men should approach women. Men know this, yet they're horrified at the idea of rejection. "Perhaps I am intruding upon her and her friends," they think. "She might not welcome the interruption!" New York men can cope with rejection by laughing about it with their pals and move on, however, British men seem swallowed up in despair. British women agree that the man should approach first. But they are at fault too, as they give no clear signs of encouragement to the few men who dare, she claimed. Smith said that what British women counted as obvious eye contact is, to men, no more than a blink. When the British women were asked how they let a man know they are interested, they said "I look at them; I don't need to do anything physical. The fact I'm listening makes them feel important," or "I do obvious body language, like pointing my knee in his direction while we chat." Smith said that only 35 per cent of British men could tell if a woman was flirting with them. "It's best when women do something deliberate," one man said. British women are slightly better placed than men as 57 per cent think they are good at spotting flirtation. Yet, it is the smallest percentage in the poll. In Paris, 53 per cent of men and 95 per cent of women think they know what's happening. Men are expected to make the first move, although, a full 30 per cent said that they would never approach anyone in a flirtatious way. Image Link Flickr, Source: Indian Express

Rolling Stones To Release 'GRRR!' - New 50-Track Greatest Hits Collection For 50th Anniversary

The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones, ABKCO Music & Records and Universal Music Group are pleased to announce the release of GRRR! by The Rolling Stones on the 12th of November 2012 for the World Excluding North America and on the 13th of November 2012 in North America. Available in various different formats – including a three-CD 50 track version featuring 50 tracks, and a four-CD Super-Deluxe version gathering a whopping 80 tracks – the collection tells the fascinating ongoing story of the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band In The World, from their high octane version of Chuck Berry's Come On, their first single issued in June 1963, via the thrilling chart-toppers The Last Time, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Get Off Of My Cloud, Jumping Jack Flash and Honky Tonk Women and the perennial juke-box and concert favorites Brown Sugar, Tumbling Dice, Miss You and Start Me Up, all the way to the present day with the inclusion of Gloom And Doom and One Last Shot, two new studio recordings recently completed by the group in Paris, France. These brand new recordings constitute the first time Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood have all been together in the studio since completing the exalted A Bigger Bang album in 2005, and follow on from the critically-acclaimed expanded re-releases of the historic 40th Anniversary live Madison Square Garden concert "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!" in November 2009 and of two of their seventies masterworks, Exile on Main St., in May 2010, and Some Girls, in November 2011. All GRRR! formats will feature a striking painting by award-winning American artist Walton Ford, who has created the latest in a long line of iconic artwork that has always been part of the band's DNA. MickThe Rolling Stones
Jagger and Keith Richards touch, met were schoolfriends who lost up again at Dartford train station in 1960, and bonded over a shared love of rock'n'roll and Chicago blues. Within a couple of years, they were joined by guitarist Brian Jones and pianist Ian Stewart and became part of the rich rhythm and blues scene that gravitated around Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies in London. By January 1963, they had added drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman and were playing a repertoire of Chess Records favorites Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters – whose Rollin' Stone composition provided their name – and Howlin' Wolf – whose Little Red Rooster became their second UK number one in 1964. Jagger and Richards forged a creative partnership that endures to this day and has produced some of the most memorable songs in music history, including the much-covered Ruby Tuesday and Wild Horses. The Jagger-Richards catalog is remarkably consistent, full of unexpected lyrical and melodic twists which helped shaped popular music. Compositions like 19th Nervous Breakdown, Paint It, Black, Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? and Let's Spend The Night Together articulated the feelings and frustrations of the counterculture generation and held a mirror to British society. In 1968, the Rolling Stones made the seminal Beggars bankt album, featuring the heart-of-darkness opener Sympathy For The Devil and the finely-observed Street Fighting Man whose 'what can a poor boy do, except to sing for a rock'n'roll band?' lyric sounds more apposite than ever. They survived the loss of Jones, replaced by Mick Taylor who proved a sterling contributor to Let It Bleed, the influential 1969 album which included the elegiac You Can't Always Get What You Want and the ominous, eerily prescient Gimme Shelter. With Jagger, the ultimate showman setting the gold standard for other lead singers, and Richards, the iconic guitarist raising the bar in riff-making, the Rolling Stones were the first band to master the art and craft of playing arenas and effortlessly made the groundbreaking move into stadiums in the seventies. They have remained the world's top concert attraction with every successive record-breaking tour, as effective performing beautiful ballads like Angie and Fool To Cry as the out-and-out rocker Respectable, their 1978 riposte to the punks who copped so many moves from them. The arrival of Wood, who took over from Taylor in the mid-seventies, added his signature slide and pedal steel guitar to an already heady brew and proved the perfect partner in the 'ancient art for weaving' for Richards on tracks like Beast Of Burden, coincided with the funkier direction of the dancefloor fillers Hot Stuff and Emotional Rescue. In 1983, the edgy, sonically-adventurous Undercover Of The Night showed the group still had their finger on the pulse of alternative culture; the controversial Undercover video, directed by Sex Pistols associate Julien Temple, provided another highlight in a storied career that has seen them collaborate with world-famous film-makers like Nicolas Roeg, Jean-Luc Godard, Martin Scorsese, the Maysles and Peter Whitehead. The Rolling Stones overcame the mid-eighties hiatus that nevertheless saw them score one of their biggest successes with their superior version of Bob & Earl's Harlem Shuffle, and returned stronger than ever with the Steel Wheels album and its irresistible lead off-track Mixed Emotions in 1989. Following Wyman's exit in 1993, they soldiered on and hit another purple patch with the Voodoo Lounge and Bridges To Babylon albums and their respective singles, the harmonica-led Love Is Strong and Anybody Seen My Baby, their first hit to feature sampling and rapping. In 2005, the soulful, gospel-infused ballad Streets Of Love, from A Bigger Bang, became a worldwide smash 42 years after their first chart entry, while the 1972 outtake Plundered My Soul helped the expanded Exile On Main St. return to the top the UK album charts 38 years after its original release, a feat unmatched by any artist. Cherry-picking timeless hit singles and classic album tracks from their peerless catalog and bringing the story up to date, the various formats of GRRR! offer the perfect package to help Rolling Stones fans celebrate the group's fiftieth anniversary in style. In celebration of the Rolling Stones' incredible journey, an innovative campaign has been launched to reveal their GRRR! Greatest Hits album sleeve using 3D Augmented Reality. During a three week teaser campaign, fans were invited to download the free uView app in preparation for a big announcement. From today, using the uView app fans can scan the GRRR! sleeve and watch the stunning imagery come to life in 3D animation right before their eyes. The campaign will have further exciting updates coming soon. The use of one of the most advanced forms of mobile technology currently around solidifies The Rolling Stones as one of the most innovative bands in the world and as relevant as they have always been. The technology has been developed in partnership with Aurasma, the leaders in image recognition and augmented reality technology. Source: Starpulse

'Love cheat' Kristen Stewart ridiculed in Snow White cartoon

Kristen Stewart
Liberty Ross, the wife of director Rupert Sanders has apparently posted a spoof picture of Snow White online in a jibe at Kristen Stewart who cheated on Robert Pattinson with her husband. The report of Stewart’s infidelity had emerged earlier this week when the Twilight star admitted to the fling in an apology to her British boyfriend. The 22-year-old had starred in Sanders ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ film alongside Charlize Theron and had been photographed with him. Both of them have issued apologies to their partners but Sanders’s model wife Ross appears to have come out against Stewart using social media. On Instagrfam, a user with the name libertyross reportedly uploaded a picture of Disney’s Snow White in tears drinking from a bottle. It was captioned: “Not so pretty or pure afterall” in an apparent reference to Stewart’s part in the fairytale remake, the Telegraph reported. Ross had previously praised Stewart, saying at the film’s premiere in London that she was “my number one choice” for the role. She had said there was something “very transfixing” about Stewart. But since the scandal broke, she has deleted her Twitter account after last tweeting: “Wow” Source: Screen IndiaImage: flickr.com

Sometimes I cope with it very well, sometimes it's a struggle." Madonna has even written a new song about her struggle, called I Don't Give A..., in which she raps about "the life of an ex-wife", "custody" and "pre-nups", apparently in reference to her failed marriage to Ritchie. She adds, "It's about the life of a single mother. Why women get to call the shots in bed wars

Image Link Flickr

London, (ANI): A recent survey has revealed that women generally tend to get their way in bed wars, when it comes to getting to sleep on their preferred side of the bed. In order to get a good night's sleep, hardly one man out of 10 insists on his preferred side, a survey revealed. And while a quarter of couples disagree over sleeping arrangements, the woman nearly always gets her way. Experts, while citing the reasons behind this gesture of men, have persisted that men are actually acting instinctively to "protect" their womenfolk in situations where they feel vulnerable. Reasons for women choosing one side of the bed over the other range from wanting to avoid their sleeping partner breathing on them to wanting the man to sleep nearest to the door so he can confront any burglars. "Men are naturally designed to want to protect their female partner and that means, more often than not, they will allow her to call the shots over 'disputed territories' like preference for a certain side of the bed," the Daily Express quoted psychologist Donna Dawson, as saying. "Women are far more likely to insist on things going their way than a man too. Men are generally happy to adapt." "There are lots of reasons why a woman prefers a certain side of the bed - being furthest from the door and danger; being closest to the door so she can deal with a crying baby; wanting to be nearer the window for fresher air." "The underlying message is women wear the trousers in the bedroom and men generally don't put up much of a fight when it comes to bedroom-related disputes," she added. (ANI) Source: News Track India

I'm treated like princess in India: Amy Jackson

Amy Jackson, who’s only ambition a few years ago was to pass her exams and follow in her mother’s footsteps and work with horses, has become such a massive movie star in India that her films attract audiences in millions. The British beauty has her own language and dance teacher, driver, cook, personal assistant and make-up artist. The 21-year-old’s life was turned on its head when a Bollywood film director spotted a picture of her on the internet and decided she had the perfect look for his films. He tracked her down and now Jackson has become the first ever white British to star in the leading role of an Indian film. It’s impossible for her to walk down the street in Mumbai without protection for fear of being mobbed by her army of fans. "It is ridiculous — like a mad whirlwind," she said. "I realised just how famous I was when I went to a film awards ceremony last year and people were screaming my name. "I get treated like a princess in India, it is like a different world. "I can’t go out on my own without a driver. I recently treated myself to a Mercedes CLS and was looking forward to driving it. The roads are manic in Mumbai so I went out to the supermarket late at night. "But I had to pull over after a few minutes and get my driver to come and get me — it was too crazy. "It’s mad that I am so famous. I was once so terrified of acting that I used to pretend I was ill to get out of drama. I was so shy I couldn’t stand up in front of people and speak. Now I’m in the next big three Bollywood movies. "I’m signed up for work for the next two years and I am one of the youngest ever actresses out there. I feel like pinching myself," she said. Amy was only 16 when she was spotted by a modelling scout while at a horseriding show. "I'd had my braces by then, my teeth had been sorted. "I used to dress up in my older sister Alisia’s clothes and thought modelling would be fun," Jackson said. She went on to enter Miss Teen World, Miss Teen International and Miss England and signed with top agency Samantha Bond in London. Her mum Rita, a horseriding teacher, and dad Alan, a BBC radio producer, backed her when she quit college with exceptional GCSEs. "I did two weeks studying philosophy and ethics but I wasn’t enjoying it. My mother said I should perhaps take a year out then go back to education. "That was in September 2009 and I was the Miss Teen World so I started travelling to America doing promotional work for the title. "I loved it. I am 5ft 7in so too short for the catwalk, but I loved glamorous photoshoots. Modelling finally gave me confidence," she said. However, she hadn’t bargained on meeting Bollywood director A L Vijay, who was in the UK that year looking for new stars for his movies and searched the internet for British girls. Amy’s agency contacted her and said he wanted to meet for which she travelled from Walton, Liverpool, to London in December. "The director liked that I was white but had an Indian look. "He offered me the job. I told him I’d never acted but he said he would arrange workshops for me and help me with the scripts and the language. "I thought, ‘Why not?’. It was a three-month contract in India and I saw it as a mini adventure," she said. She signed up to play a British girl in Madrasapattinam, a period drama, and within days flew to Chennai. "I’d never been anywhere like it. There were cows wandering through the city. "I was homesick, I didn’t like the spicy food, I missed my friends and a good fry-up. But I fell in love with the film sets," she said. The film came out in July 2010 to critical acclaim and Amy was an instant star. Since then she has done three films. Her wages match those of a Hollywood star — and she has the lifestyle to go with it. She met Bollywood hunk Prateik, 25, on set and the couple now live together. "We are an A-list couple in India. People ask us for photographs and autographs all the time. We get recognised wherever we go. Actors in India are massive and treated like mini gods. "I’ve been on the cover of Vogue, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan magazines. I’m the face of Emporio Armani in India. But I don’t take it for granted — I work hard every day to make sure I get better and better. "I often work seven days a week, 12 hours a day. I have a daily dance lesson and a Hindi teacher. "I didn’t even go home for Christmas because I wanted to work. "The world of Bollywood is crazy. It is the biggest film industry in the world. I have my own personal assistant who sorts out my life. He brings me green tea on set and sorts my lunch, dinner and chocolate biscuits. "I have a cook called Sheila at home who makes me scrambled eggs in bed. I can’t cook a thing so when she is off at weekends I struggle. I bring Super Noodles and Pot Noodles back from the UK — I am going to take about 50 packets back this time. I can survive if I have them," she added. Source: Screen India

The dress accentuated her lower half with a slit up the leg. Alice wore a half latex cocktail dress that hugged her figure in all the right places. In the third installment of the popular film franchise, Agent J (Will Smith) takes a trip into the past in order to save both the future and his taciturn partner Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones). See more photos of Nicole and Alice..Source: Starpulse
