Sonam Kapoor spotlights fashion from Manipur

Actress Sonam Kapoor recently hosted Architectural Digest’s Global Editorial Director, Amy Astley, for a private dinner in Mumbai, using the event to again spotlight Indian craftsmanship.

For the occasion, Kapoor wore an outfit from the label East, founded by Manipuri designer Easternlight Zimik. Her ensemble was an Akha set from the brand’s Patrons Collection, noted for its refined craftsmanship and subtle details reflecting the textile heritage of India’s northeastern region.

Kapoor has long used her platform on international red carpets and in public appearances to promote indigenous Indian brands, handwoven textiles, and traditional embroidery.

Designer Easternlight Zimik said actress Sonam Kapoor’s decision to wear one of his creations represents a “breakthrough” for the crafts and culture of India’s northeastern region, advocating for its traditional attire to be celebrated nationally alongside the saree.

Zimik, founder of the label East, made the statement after Kapoor hosted a dinner for Architectural Digest's Amy Astley in Mumbai while wearing an ‘Ākha Set’ from Zimik's Patrons Collection.
“Today, as our journey progresses, this moment feels like something I always manifested—a breakthrough for our district, our craft, and our culture,” Zimik wrote in a social media post. “For some, this may be just another outfit. But for us, it's cultural evolution.”

A core mission of the brand, Zimik explained, is to bring traditional northeastern attire like the Kashan, Mekhala, and Puan into the mainstream Indian fashion conversation, giving them a prominence equivalent to the nationally recognized saree. “Today, I truly feel that my sacrifices and restless nights are finally paying off,” Zimik expressed.

He emphasised that his brand, which is rooted in Manipur, never sought celebrity approval to validate its traditional wear, but that visibility is crucial. “In a country as beautifully diverse as India, sometimes the presence of advocates in the mainstream becomes crucial - not for permission, but for visibility and deeper cultural understanding,” he stated.

The designed emphasised the power of fashion in championing the “unheard voices” of the country, citing actor Sonam Kapoor as a key influence in bringing Indian culture into the spotlight.
Zimik said the nation's constitution celebrates “unity in diversity,” and it is essential these stories reach every corner of the nation.

“When it comes to fashion, few possess the power to champion the unheard voices of this country like Sonam Kapoor. Her influence helps bring our culture into the spotlight—not through PR activities, but through the support of genuine individuals who believe in our journey and want to amplify our voice,” he said.

The designer described such advocates as being “close to my heart,” adding that their support signifies more than a moment, but “the beginning of a movement.”

“By advocating for these handcrafted garments and revitalizing the heritage weaving skills of our communities, the brand aims to give North East attire a prominent place in India’s fashion lexicon, to inspire cultural pride and wider recognition,” Zimik emphasised.

He thanked stylist Manisha Melwani for her unwavering support and her “keen eye for discovering stories that matter.” Zimik also acknowledged his team. “… my incredible EAST weavers, this year we have achieved so much—more than words can express. One day, I hope to show you just how much you mean to me and how every fiber of your craft is valued. Thank God for everything.” Sonam Kapoor spotlights fashion from Manipur | MorungExpress | morungexpress.com

'Mindful luxury': Dia Mirza pens note for designer Rahul Mishra & his 3Es

Mumbai, (IANS) Dia Mirza, who recently wore a saree by fashion designer Rahul Mishra, expressed that everything he stands for deeply resonates with her and shared how his fashion label operates on the philosophy of the 3 E's -- environment, employment, and empowerment.

Dia, who actively participates in social and environmental issues, took to Instagram and shared a series of photos.

The actress donned a black sheer saree adorned with silver floral work, paired with a sleeveless silver blouse featuring a deep neckline.

For her makeup, the former Miss India opted for red glossy lips, brown eyeshadow, and highlighted cheeks. She kept her hair open with a side parting and accessorised with small diamond earrings.

Alongside the pictures, Dia penned a long note for designer Rahul Mishra, who won the International Woolmark Prize in 2014 at Milan Fashion Week.

The actress wrote: "I have been a long ardent admirer of @rahulmishra_7 and everything he stands for finds deep resonance with me. Such a privilege to wear and spotlight his brand ethos. Rahul Mishra’s fashion label operates on the philosophy of the 3 E’s: Environment, Employment, and Empowerment. It aims to redefine luxury through the lens of participation rather than mere consumption. Mishra’s purpose defines his process, which centres around the achingly slowed-down techniques of hand-weaving and hand embroidery."

"This deliberate approach not only fosters sustainable livelihoods for over 1000 artisans but also embodies the principles of sustainability, presenting fashion as a means to engage and uplift India’s local craft community," shared Dia.

The 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha: A Love Story' actress shared how Rahul, the first Indian designer invited to showcase at Haute Couture Week in Paris, champions the idea that 'luxury is not consumption, luxury is participation.'

"His label prioritises mindful luxury, utilising slow processes to encourage involvement from craft communities across rural India. With the philosophy of “ASAP” (As Slow As Possible), Mishra emphasises the importance of a deliberate, slow approach to craftsmanship. He is also recognised for pioneering ‘reverse migration’, urging artisans living in urban slums to return to their villages, where they receive urban-level wages to bolster rural economies," said Dia.

She concluded: "Through these initiatives, Mishra’s fashion label provides employment opportunities and empowerment to the next generation of embroiderers and weavers in the country. #RahulMishra #SlowFashion #MindfulConsumption #HandcraftedInIndia #SDGs #globalgoals."Meanwhile, on the movie front, Dia was featured in 'Dhak Dhak', 'Bheed', and 'Thappad'. Mrs world 2022 Sargam Koushal not averse to joining Bollywood

JAMMU: Jammu-born Sargam Koushal, who won the Mrs World crown to India in December last year, says she would not mind joining Bollywood but for now she wants to focus on educating youth against the drug menace. The Mumbai-based model, 32, became the first Indian to win the crown after Aditi Govitrikar in 2001. "I will feel good if an opportunity comes my way from Bollywood, known for its popularity and fame. I do not have any problem with that but right now there are more important things to do," Koushal told reporters here. "We are planning a campaign in May or June for the youth to motivate them to stay away from drugs," she added. On the first visit to her birthplace after winning the beauty pageant in Las Vegas on December 17 last year, Koushal said she is totally focused on the awareness campaign to empower women and young girls. "From Mrs India to Mrs world, I do not see any change in between but surely the responsibility has gone up manifold," she said. Koushal thanked her parents for their support and said she would like other parents, husbands and others to support women in achieving their dreams. "I am modelling and will continue to do so. I started modelling even though I like teaching the most. Modelling was my passion and my parents were also fascinated with it and encouraged me to move forward," she said. She said the turning point in her life came when her husband, who is an Indian Navy officer, was transferred to Mumbai. "There, I found youngsters engaged in activities which we cannot even think of. From a young age, they get associated with the film industry, modelling industry, become stylists when they are still in college and it motivated me a lot." The actor said Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of the country and the local youth are talented and educated but they lack exposure and opportunity. She also urged married women not to forget themselves while taking care of their families. "It is unfortunate that the woman after getting married forgets herself and is overburdened with family responsibilities. They need to voice out their opinions and follow their dreams," she said. Miss England finalist Melisa Raouf creates history, is first woman in pageant's history to compete without makeup

AUG 29, 2022 Beauty pageant and makeup artistry are almost synonymous because of obvious presentation reasons. But one woman has made history by reaching the finals of a national beauty pageant without any makeup. Melisa Raouf, 20, is a politics student from London. By deciding to appear barefaced in Miss England this year, she became the first woman in the contest's 94-year-old history to compete without any makeup. The contest, which is organised by Angie Beasly every year, is promoted to thousands of women around England in local media. While organisers of the contest did introduce a 'Bare Faced' round in the 2019 edition, never in its history has a woman gone without makeup throughout. But Melisa has now changed that. The 20-year-old said she decided to compete barefaced in a bid to promote inner beauty and challenge the beauty ideals that are promoted and perpetuated by media, advertisers and social media. "It means a lot to me as I feel many girls of different ages wear makeup because they feel pressured to do so. If one is happy in their own skin we should not be made to cover up our face with makeup. Our flaws make us who we are and that's what makes every individual unique," the sold The Independent. "I think people should love and embrace their flaws and blemishes, as we know real beauty lies within simplicity. I never felt I met beauty standards. I have recently accepted that I am beautiful in my own skin and that's why I decided to compete with no makeup," she added. Melisa's noteworthy appearance and demeanor have earned praise from people all over the world. It has also received a response from the contest's organiser. "This is the first time I've seen a contestant completely makeup-free competing in a semi-final and she said she felt empowered against all the other contestants," said Beasley. The 20-year-old will compete with other 40 women for the Miss England crown on October 17. Copyright © Jammu Links News Source: Jammu Links News

Lakme Fashion Week to launch 'Virtual Showroom' to support fashion industry

MAY 28, 2020 MUMBAI: In order to support designers, artisans and the business of fashion amid the coronavirus pandemic-led lockdown, Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) on Thursday announced the launch of ''Virtual Showroom''. A first of its kind concept in India, Virtual Showroom will be a marketplace platform for designers and artisans to showcase their past and current collections to consumers, helping them to drive sales of the stocks that have been stuck due to the pandemic, a press release said. The LFW will be supporting designer sales without charging designers any fee to be a part of the platform. The platform will allow designers to upload their product catalogue and costing, while buyers will get pre-approved access to browse through designer collections and have the option of placing orders directly with the designers. Outstation buyers can also book private viewing appointments with the designers during the LFW. As a business-to-business (B2B) space, it will also help designers to showcase their future collections and directly get orders from buyers of multi-designer stores across the world. Ashwath Swaminathan, head of innovations at Lakme said under the circumstances, designers will need new ways to reach their buyers and consumers. "The Virtual Showroom is an initiative which can fulfil this need by leveraging technology. The Virtual Showroom offers many tools to make transacting more transparent and convenient," he said. Jaspreet Chandok - head of lifestyle businesses, IMG Reliance said, "With the Virtual Showroom, there's hope for the fashion world to continue as best as it can and adapt in new ways that may provide better solutions."
