Chinese film market rebounds during Spring Festival

Cinemas in China excitedly welcomed back flocks of moviegoers to see movies on the big screen during the recent Spring Festival holiday, with the box office total reaching the second highest in history.

Due to COVID-19's negative impact last year, China's film market has suffered numerous blows over a prolonged period of time. But after restrictions were removed when the Chinese government adopted new pandemic prevention policies at the end of last year, the much-anticipated lucrative Spring Festival film season eventually arrived, and soared.

The holiday box office sold 129 million tickets from Jan. 22-27, generating a staggering revenue of 6.76 billion yuan ($996 million), according to big data entertainment platform Beacon. The earnings overtook that of the same holiday last year, making this year's Spring Festival holiday the second highest-grossing to date in history, only second to that of 2021.

Six new domestic titles were released during the holiday. Zhang Yimou's period suspense thriller "Full River Red," a twist-filled plot mixed with comedy, was the biggest winner during the Spring Festival, raking in 2.61 billion yuan and accounting for 38.6% of the holiday's box office total. Its takings have made it the biggest film in Zhang's already legendary career and it looks to continue to accumulate a stunning box office total in the coming weeks.

Frant Gwo's Chinese sci-fi film "The Wandering Earth 2," a prequel to the blockbuster's first installment in 2019, also delivered phenomenal box office performance during the holiday, taking a haul of 2.16 billion yuan, accounting for 32% of the box office total. Its momentum will continue after the holiday, with the cast and crew announcing they will embark on a national meet-and-greet tour to promote the film. The film, praised by the audience and critics as a new milestone in Chinese sci-fi filmmaking, also had a limited opening in some countries around the world during the Chinese Lunar New Year, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Malaysia.

The animated film "Boonie Bears: Guardian Code" took third place on the box office chart. The ninth installment in one of China's longest-running movie franchises grossed 748 million yuan, pushing the franchise's total box office takings to over 5 billion yuan.

Other high-performing films included Cheng Er's spy-action thriller "Hidden Blade" starring Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, which grossed 493 million yuan; "Deep Sea," a critically-acclaimed animated fantasy from Tian Xiaopeng, the helmsman of "Monkey King: Hero is Back," which grossed 359 million yuan; and "Five Hundred Miles," a romantic comedy starring comedian Zhang Xiaofei, best known for her part in the 2021 dark horse "Hi, Mom," which grossed 290 million yuan.

Even "Avatar: The Way of Water" grossed a remarkable 49.5 million yuan during the holiday. The film has extended its run in China until Feb. 14, but its screening arrangements were mostly cut on the first day of the holiday to give way to China's new blockbuster releases. However, more and more cinemas started to put it back into schedule over the few days following, with many of its showings in large premium formats sold out. The film's total China takings have now surpassed 1.62 billion yuan, making it the best-performing foreign film during the pandemic era. Its worldwide total has grossed more than $2.07 billion, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of all time.

Theaters supporting large premium formats did quite well during the holiday. For example, IMAX China reported that it collected 231 million yuan from its IMAX screens, which is the best Spring Festival performance for IMAX ever, accounting for 8.22% of the total box office takings in China from only 1% of all screens in the market. The IMAX version of "The Wandering Earth 2" led the way, grossing 178 million yuan across the IMAX network. Of the top 10 Chinese cinemas to make the most profit, eight had IMAX screens.

There was also a little drama during the holiday, with the sports film "Ping-pong of China," directed by Deng Chao and Yu Baimei and starring Deng himself, delaying its release until Jan. 24 from its originally planned release of Jan. 22 due to some last-minute changes to the film. The distributors then found that there was so little room and potential for the film to thrive during the highly competitive season that they decided to delay its wide release to Feb. 17. Nevertheless, after screening for just two days, the film grossed 38.14 million yuan.

Rao Shuguang, president of the China Film Critics Association, said the movie frenzy made him feel that Chinese films are off to "a new start towards a better future" after being hampered by COVID-19 for years. There have been calls from critics for more quality films to be made to draw more moviegoers back to cinemas, citing their significance to the recovery of the film industry overall.Notable new releases in the coming weeks include the much-anticipated crime film "Where the Wind Blows," directed by Philip Yung and starring Hong Kong megastars Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung, which will hit Chinese screens on Feb. 5. Disney and foreign film companies will also put out new releases in China soon, including "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," which will be released in China on Feb. 7 and Feb. 17, respectively, and marks the first Marvel Cinematic Universe titles to enter the Chinese market since 2019. Warner Bros/DC's "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" will also be released in China, adding to the line-up of foreign blockbuster films making their way to Chinese theaters. Source: China.org.cn

Movie fans gather to bid farewell to the last standalone movie theatre La Scala amid the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in Bangkok yesterday.
Fans gather for final showings at Thailand’s theatre: Donning masks and observing social distancing practices, movie and theatre fans yesterday bid a final farewell to Thailand’s La Scala theatre in Donning masks and observing social distancing practices, movie and theatre fans yesterday bid a final farewell to Thailand’s La Scala theatre in Bangkok, which is set to close its doors in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The 50-year-old theatre, built in the late modernism architectural style with an Art-Deco interior, has been struggling for the last decade to stay profitable amid competition from new media and increases in its land lease costs.
The pandemic and restrictions on movement to curb its spread dealt the final blow to the theatre in the heart of the capital. The Thai economy as a whole is forecast to shrink this year more than any other in Southeast Asia.
“I’m so sad I have no words. It is heartbreaking,” said Nanta Tansasha, whose family runs the theatre, which was built by her father.
“When we look toward the future, I don’t know if it (business) will pick up... so I decided to stop the business now,” she said.
The theatre had a glamorous opening on New Year’s Eve in 1970, and the first movie it showed was “The Undefeated” starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson.
In its heyday, it rolled out the red carpet for celebrities including the likes of Jean Claud Van Damme for the Bangkok Film Festival in 2003.
The final showings this weekend include Italian movies and Thai documentaries, with 3,000 tickets sold to fans who want to pay one last visit. Source: https://www.gulf-times.com:

It is more of an attitude and not about clothes. But the film took it a step further and called for the character to be a sexy seductress. The entire body language had to spell it out. And as I said earlier, it’s nothing like the real me. I may be sexy, but I’m no seductress. And your character's in Race 2, Raam Leela, Chennai Express can be considered as Glamorous ones? But all my roles are so different from each other that it’s really interesting to be busy with work. Do you enjoy being in the latest bandwagon of 100 Crore Club? More than the box-office records or business figures of the film, It is the experience of shooting that I cherish. You will be shooting your upcoming film 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' in Kashmir? I have never shot in Kashmir before. I have heard so much about the place and seen its beauty only through Bollywood films. I am really looking forward to filming in the Valley. It is my first visit. It’s great that our filmmakers are rediscovering Kashmir. You were from Anupam Kher acting school, What was your first reaction when you faced the camera for the first time? I have absolutely no film background. I don't come from a film family and I had never been on a film set until my first film. In a lot of ways, it gave me a little information about what to expect. But at the same time, I think the best education I've had is to actually be on a film set and learn from there. How do you remain so down to earth despite being on the position of a 'Star'? Thank you so much for your compliments, But this because my parents who gave me this up-bringing. I look forward to my father who after gaining so much in life is still very humble and down to earth. He is my inspiration. And how was your journey as of a Down-To-Earth star? The journey was fabulous. Everyone has their Up's and Down's and everyone has to work hard. But for me, It was always a learning lesson on every step of my life. In every film, I think i have learnt something new. And it'll continue to be like that. What is Race 2? Would you tell us something about it and your character? Everyone in Race 2 has a 'Grey Shade'. Everyone wants to win the Race in the film. There's a lot of manipulations involved in each character. I play a character of a seductress called Aleena, Who uses her Looks to achieve whatever she wants. This is something very new to me. I have never played such a character in my career so far. How do you manage to deal with Controversies and Link-Up's around you? I don't react to them at all. I think all these things are a part of my profession. If i am an actress and i am into Limelight, People will definitely talk such things. I don't Focus on these things. I want people to enjoy my work. Source: India-EducationImage: flickr.com

Jackie Chan To Star In 'Expendables 3,' 'Rush Hour 4' A Possibility

Jackie Chan has revealed he's going to star in the third installment of the ensemble action series The Expendables. In fact, he was invited to make an appearance in Expendables 2, but he was too busy. "Sly had invited me to be in 'Expendables 2' but I was too busy filming CZ12 and couldn't make a commitment to the film. But he did extend his invitation to the third movie, which I agreed on the condition that I will be appearing as more than just a minor role with a few scenes," Chan revealed during a press junket for Chinese film CZ12. There is also a possibility of a Rush Hour 4. TotalFilm reports Chris Tucker is considering a buddy comedy flick currently titled Skip Tracer, but he accepts it appears the film will be changed into the fourth Rush Hour film. "The script is currently viewed by Chris Tucker. Personally, I feel that if he were to pick it up, it would be better if we turned it into Rush Hour 4 but I do think that three movies for the franchise is a perfect ending. It would be better to start a new buddy movie with someone new," said Chan. © 2012 Starpulse.com, Photo Credits: PR Photos, Source: Starpulse.com

Kareena Kapoor sitting idle these days

Kareena Kapoor tops the list of every Bollywood director. While film makers are waiting patiently for Bebo to come on board, she seems to be sitting idle even after blocking her calendar with upcoming projects. What seems to be keeping Bebo idle these days? Bebo had finalized dates for Prakash Jha’s movie Satyagraha with Ajay Devgn, which was to go on floor this January. However, zoOm found out that since Ajay Devgn is currently filming for Himmatwala, which got delayed because of the controversy surrounding Son of Sardar, Satyagraha will get deferred. This means Bebo’s dates are definitely being wasted! Recently, Bebo had to let go of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela even though she had allocated dates for the same. In the past, Kareena has been forced to pass on a few films including Karan Johar’s, as her calendar was overbooked. We just hope this temporary phase in her life doesn’t leave her waiting on one foot for long. Source: Page3

Priyanka Chopra’s songs turning chartbusters

Priyanka Chopra’s songs turning chartbusters!
Things may not be hunky-dory for Priyanka Chopra, what with her father’s poor health and Barfi! getting knocked out of the Oscar race, but the actress-singer has a reason to be happy.
It’s no news that her single ‘In My City’ has been received very well internationally; now the remix versions of the song are busting the charts. One remix has stormed into the top ten of the pop chart on Beatport, which is regarded as the world’s largest DJ and electronic music  community. At the time of this report, the remix of Priyanka’s song was on the second spot, even above the remix of the popular ‘Gangnam
Style’. The news brings a sliver of joy for Priyanka Chopra who’s been quite downbeat because of her father’s ill health, so much so that she’s been forgetting her dialogues while shooting for director Apoorva Lakhia’s Zanjeer. Meanwhile, Priyanka recently launched a website to support adolescent girls and prevent any gender discrimination. “Even today, millions of girls continue to be deprived of their right to education. Early marriage keeps lakhs of girls from completing their studies,” she said at the event. Priyanka Chopra’s next big professional challenge would be to play the noted Indian boxer Mary Kom in a film. Well, the gal’s just indefatigable. Source: ApunKaChoice

Jackie Chan: Pulling new punches

Jackie Chan realizes he isn't getting any younger and is searching for young talent to replace him as Chinese action film's new icon. Jackie Chan was on the set of his latest film Chinese Zodiac 12. He was supposed to jump through a picture frame hanging from the ceiling but got stuck. He crashed to the floor and injured his waist. The crew was shocked into silence. Before anyone moved to help him, he said: "I'm not dead. Don't be so quiet." He slowly got up and walked toward the corner of the room, blood oozing from his back. Chan recovered soon after. But the incident made him think. "I told myself I can't be so

lucky every time," Chan says. "I have to admit, I'm not a young man anymore. That was when I decided Chinese Zodiac 12 would be my last major action film. That means I will still make action films but not on this scale." Chinese Zodiac 12 is also Chan's 101st film. The danger of filmmaking is frightening but fascinating at the same time, motivating the 58-year-old to write, direct and lead the action comedy to be released on Dec 20. "You may not believe it, but I still panic before shooting actions scenes," he tells China Daily. "But not many people have the chance to have an entire road blocked for them to fly above. And when shooting Police Story, I fell off the roof of a building. When I was descending, I saw surprised girls standing in front of the window with their mouths wide open. It was fun." He also enjoys innovative choreography. In Chinese Zodiac 12, he wears a rollerblading suit in a chase scene filmed on zigzagging mountain roads, tries to fly without an engine and rides a log that tumbles downhill. Everyday objects,
such as sofas and paintings, become weapons. Chinese Zodiac 12 won Chan two Guinness World Records. One is for the "most stunts by a living actor". The award notes: "No insurance company will underwrite Chan's productions in which he performs all his own stunts." The star formed the Jackie Chan Stuntmen Association, training stuntmen and paying their medical bills out of his own pocket. The film also earned him the record for the "most credits in one movie". Chan assumed 15 roles in the film, including director, producer, actor and choreographer. The star has no plans to retire. He says the best way to end his career would be to suddenly die on the set. "Think of Bruce Lee and James Dean - the way they died made them eternal legends," he says. "I really can't think out a better way to end my life and career. I don't want people to see a weak and frail Jackie Chan onscreen. But I don't want to quit
Jackie Chan is interviewed at the press premiere of his action film "CZ12" in Beijing, capital of China, Dec 11, 2012. "CZ12", a work of Hong Kong-based actor and director Jackie Chan, will be released in China on Dec 20. [Photo/Xinhua]
filmmaking, either. So, the best thing is to die suddenly while I still look strong onscreen." Chan finalized his will 15 years ago. He'll leave his entire fortune, estimated at $340 million, to his wife and charity but not his children. The kung fu star is known for his unconventional views about life and death. He was devastated by his father's death but doesn't visit his tomb or burn paper money (a Chinese mourning tradition). "What matters is how I treated him when he was alive," Chan says. "What I do after his passing is pointless. I know he can't receive the paper money." He doesn't celebrate Valentine's Day, or his wife's or son's birthdays. Chan was angry when his son, Jaycee, called him on Father's Day. "I told him, don't only call me on my birthday and Father's Day. Pay more attention to me on regular days. I got his calls twice a year before, and now I get none," he says, jokingly. He does not worship the sky or sacrifice pig heads, as most Hong Kong filmmakers do before filming. He curses the heavens if it rains when it's not needed for the scene. "Call me anti-tradition, but I am not superstitious at all. I believe in real efforts," he says. He leads a group of young actors in the film, performing the same stunts as them and more dangerous ones. As with most of his films, there are few special effects. He has nothing against technology, though, he says. Actually, he wants to act in films like Batman or Superman because it's easier, he explains. "Putting on a mask, posing in front of a green screen and getting the same pay - who wouldn't want to do that? But we can't compete with Hollywood in terms of visual effects. We can't fly in ways more dazzling than Batman or Spiderman. What we can really excel at is still real kung fu performed with fists and feet." Chan hopes to find a younger version of himself but realizes this is something he can't do on his own. "People would like to invest 150 million yuan ($24 million) in a film starring me but wouldn't put up 100 million yuan for one starring three young actors," he says. "They only believe in big names." So he has been casting young actors in his films, including Daniel Wu, who starred in many of his movies, such as New Police Story and Shinjuku Incident. In his 2010 film, Little Big Soldier, he cast Xu Dongmei, a total newcomer who stood out from Disciples of Jackie Chan, a TV competition Chan initiated to find potential action stars."It would be pathetic if, many years later, Jackie Chan is still Chinese action films' most famous icon," he says. Katrina Kaif: Living the dream

I'm not an animal in the zoo: Preity

Actress Preity Zinta says she was greeted by "the shock of 40 camera flashes" when she arrived at the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport and ended up twisting her ankle due to the paparazzi's attempt to photograph her. "Sitting at home with a twisted ankle post the airport assault by photographers. First, I shoot all night and get on the plane and then get pushed," tweeted Preity, who landed in Mumbai on Sunday from Prague. The actress came back to the city after shooting in Prague for her debut production ‘Ishkq In Paris’. Photographers are said to have been stationed at the airport as Hollywood star Ashton Kutcher was expected to be there. However, the cameramen spotted Preity in a super casual look, wearing loose lowers and a T-shirt, her hair undone, and no make-up. Media has flashed pictures of Preity hiding her face behind her hand, hair and staff, but Preity says she wasn't "hiding". "Pushed and jumped on at the airport. It was raining, so I slipped. Wasn't hiding my face, was trying to recover from the shock of 40 camera flashes. And yes, in the end I was pissed off so then I definitely didn't want to show my face," she posted. The 37-year-old, whose car was damaged by paparazzi outside international talk show queen Oprah Winfrey's party in January, is angry. "If photographers ask me politely I will oblige, but next time I will either attack someone or then file a police complaint because THIS IS NOT FAIR. I am a human being not some animal in the ZOO! If my security would have pushed them, then news would report my staff assaulted the media," added Preity. She is only thankful that the shooting for ‘Ishkq In Paris’ is over. "Otherwise I'd be hopping around with a twisted ankle," she wrote, adding that she cared to give her side of the story on a social networking platform as "Every story has two sides". Review: Delhi Safari

Animation voiced by: Govinda, Boman Irani, Urmila Matondkar, Sweeney Khara, Akhshaye Khanna, Suniel Shetty, Director: Nikhil Advani
A bunch of animals are off on a mission. To tell the powers-that-be in New Delhi that their forests are in mortal danger, and so are they. Cub leopard Yuvi, his feisty mom, a chatty parrot, a large bear, and a wicked monkey set off on a journey full of adventure. Nikhil Advani’s ‘Delhi Safari’ does a great service to the animation-for-kids genre by stepping out of the tired mythological stories, and creating animals with distinctive personalities. And all through this tale, there are bits and pieces which keep you with the plot. Yuvi (Khara) is cute and anxious, his mom (Matondkar) is properly maternal, the parrot (Khanna) is nice and ‘baatooni’, the `bandar’ (Govinda) is suitably ‘badmaash’, and Bagga the bear (Irani) is big and wise. Some of the animation, in 3D, is slick and fast-paced. But the film, with its major nods to the ‘Madagascar’ series, and a few ‘Lion King’-like scenes, is not madly original. It also slows down in places to include other incidental characters. It is much too dependent on Bollywood clichés : the Bandar is a  loud Purabiya character, never missing an intonation but becoming flat after a while, a Rajasthani crane couple is very 'filmi' Marwari and nearly incomprehensible, and so on. And why, why do all animated animals have to sing and dance? This kind of film is fine just the way it is, why should it be burdened with 'item numbers', the biggest cliché of all? And finally, it is great to have a message in your film. But when it makes the film preachy, some of the fun is leached out. Save the environment at all cost, but keep the entertainment ticking. Source: Indian Express

Never paid attention to my popularity: Amitabh Bachchan

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who turned 70 today, says he never cared about his popularity but believed that one's outlook towards life matters the most. "Every human being will go through a phase when there are highs and lows. Everything that goes up also comes down. I don't think I am particularly different from anyone. We all have our highs and lows. It is just about what kind of attitude you have during the time," Bachchan said in an interview. "If you have success, you should know that it is going to be short lived and if you have lows and the courage to fight or an attempt to make a comeback, then all the best," he added. The Bollywood legend, who has appeared in over 180 films in his career spanning more than four decades, says his contemporary actors too are doing well in their capacity. "I never judge myself. I cannot say my contemporaries have been left behind me. That would be wrong. I have never paid attention to my popularity. People can write what they want to but it doesn't matter to me," he said. Bachchan said actors like Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna, Dharmendra and Rishi Kapoor are "very much active" and working in films. "Unfortunately, Shashi Kapoor is unwell or else I am sure he too would be active. "In fact, Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha have entered politics and are doing well... I feel I have been left behind by my contemporaries," he said. Bachchan, who acted only once with Dilip Kumar on screen- in 1982 hit 'Shakti', says the acting great is his idol. "Dilip saab and Waheedaji (Waheeda Rehman) are my favourite artists of all time and my idols even today. When it comes to the history of Indian cinema, I believe it can be easily divided into an era before Dilip Kumar, and after he joined films. There cannot be anyone like him," he said. Source: ScreenIndiaImage: flickr.com

US rock group Dave Matthews Band's new album, "Away From the World", landed in the top spot on the Billboard 200 on Wednesday - the band's sixth straight No 1-debuting studio album. But the album's 266,000 sales figure was the band's smallest album launch since 1996's "Crash", which sold 254,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures. For only the second time in history, the top six albums on the Billboard 200 chart are debuts, the music publication said. Country music quartet Little Big Town's new arrival, "Tornado", took the second place slot after selling 113,000 copies. It was the group's best ever sales week. Bob Dylan's latest studio album, "Tempest", landed in the No 3 spot. It sold 110,000 copies. In fourth position, The Avett Brothers' "The Carpenter" sold 98,000 copies. Rock act the xx's second album, "Coexist", landed in the No 5 spot, while ZZ Top's "La Futura" came in at No 6 - the legendary rock band's highest debuting album ever. On the digital songs chart, country-pop crossover artist Taylor Swift held on to the top spot for the fifth straight week with her single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together". US album sales so far in 2012 stand at 207.29 million units, down 5 percent from the same time last year. Source: China.org.cn

National award for playback won't change my calling: Rupa Ganguly

Rupa Ganguly
Though she bagged the national award for her song in the critically acclaimed film 'Abosheshe', Rupa Ganguly, known to millions as Draupadi from the serial 'Mahabharat', does not want to branch out into singing. Recording her song for a film after long 12 years, Rupa said she was more focused on acting than singing and wondered what convinced the national award authorities to pick her up. "The song seemed to feel good more because of the visuals, which created the mood, than the quality of my singing," said Rupa. The 45-year-old actress said her voice was not in proper shape due to back to back shooting and there were far more worthy contenders for the award. "There were many other contenders who did a better job in other films, I guess," Rupa said at a meet to promote the film, which released today. The actress said the director and the script-writer were insistent that none but she could do the playback part and for her part she was determined not to bite the bullet. "I felt like telling them, 'have you all turned mad'? But ultimately I had to give in. They were all so insistent," Rupa recalled. Probably they were inspired by Rituparno Ghosh who, she said, made her sing in full throated voice in the film 'Bariwali' where she had played the character of a heroine present in a shooting. She, however, said she could deliver with proper practice and musical accompaniment as she had brought out a solo Rabindrasangeet album in the past. "It was Rituparno who first made me sing my own number without any musical accompaniment in a film, but he was already a known name at that time unlike Aditi, the director of Abosheshe," she said. Talking about her role of a mother role in the film, Rupa said, "I initially was not very sure if a young girl like Aditi can handle such subtle issues on celluloid at the outset when she came to me with the script by Neel Mitra." But ultimately she acquitted herself very well, Rupa said. 'Abosheshey', which had been screened at IFFI Goa, Thiruvananthapuram, Wasghington DC South Asian Film Festivals and some other festivals, deals with the quest of a son (Ankur Khanna) to discover his mother Suchismita (Rupa) and her roots. About the songs and Rupa's initial reluctance, Aditi said, "We had to assure her that in the event of her voice cracking during recording we would make an alternative arrangement. But nothing of that sort happened as you can see from the audience response to the three tracks by her including "durey kothaye". Rupa said she has no qualms to play roles of mothers in Bengali films now, since she was also acting as mom in "Na Hanyate" by director Ringo. About working with Mithun Chakraborty in two films - - the under-production entertainer 'Buddhuram Dhol' and recently released 'Nobelchor' - - Rupa said these were very different portrayals. "Mithun is a co-actor I would always love to work with. Even when he is not in proper mood he starts cracking jokes," she said. Source: Indian Express
