Lincoln: Movie Review

Hey there Chaos fans! I know I've been away for a bit, but its because I've had a lot going on... I need a vacation! Haha! Anyways, I'll be posting this week with some pics from my emerging Khorne Bezerker force, and maybe a book review (I'm nearly done with Deliverance Lost too). However, I have a movie review for you, so without further ado: It may or may not be a secret to longtime readers of this blog, but I am a history nut (that's what my wife calls me, at any rate). I love United States history, and I have admired Lincoln for sure. The truth is, I have been dying to see  this movie, but I was also afraid. The cast sounded top notch (Lewis? Jones? Straithirn? What a cast!), and I was hoping that this movie would be smart and powerful, but I was afraid because Spielberg was the man  behind the camera. At one point,
Spielberg would have been a no brainer- giving us Indiana Jones trilogy, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Close Encounters, and of course, Jaws. However, he has been on a bit of a rough patch in the 21st century- I mean, he nearly ruined Indy with Crystal Skull, for heaven's sake! The war machines of War of the Worlds were fantastic, but the human element was all over the map (the audience I saw it with cheered- yes cheered- when Dakota Fanning was taken by the martians- that's how annoying she was). Minority Report was just OK, and AI was just a mess. Yes, so I had reason to fear with this- which Spielberg was going to show up?  Thankfully, there was nothing to fear here, as old Spielberg showed up and simply told a story. It is not a simple story by any stretch, but it was simply told, without schmaltz, fancy tech, or explosive action, or trickery. No, this story didn't need any of that- it just needed someone
with courage to do the story justice, allowing it to develop at its own pace, and using the actors to their fullest. And thankfully, Spielberg and company did just that with "Lincoln". In fact, the movie is beautiful, elegant, meaningful, and even occasionally humorous, while the acting is top notch all around. The true success of the movie is its choice of scope. The movie is wise to focus in on one fight that Lincoln had to go through during the last days of the Civil War- a wider biopic would have diluted the proceedings. Just about everyone knows Lincoln as the the young "rail splitter", the Illinois lawyer, the "Great Emancipator" and as the president who put the Union back together; he is also tragically known as the first president to be assassinated. His whole life could be fodder for a movie, and I'm sure the temptation to do a sweeping biopic of his life would be there for any filmmaker. Instead of looking at Lincoln's whole life

"I was also shocked when Delnaaz was out. I felt she was a strong contender and that she could win," she added. Lincoln, Life Of Pi & Les Mis Lead 2013 Oscar Nominations (Full List)

Lincoln
This year's Oscars host, Seth MacFarlane, was accompanied by actress Emma Stone Thursday morning to announce the nominees for the 85th annual Academy Awards. Over 400 media representatives from around the world attended the 5:30am (Pacific) press conference to find out which films and stars are this year's cream of the crop. Not surprisingly, Steven Spielberg's Abraham Lincoln biopic Lincoln led the pack with a whopping 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Daniel Day Lewis), and Best Director (Spielberg). There were few surprises amongst this year's nominees, most notably the Best Director snub of Ben Affleck for his political thriller Argo, which landed seven nominations including Best Picture. Silver Linings Playbook pulled in eight nominations, including one in each acting category -- the first time a film's cast has had a nomination in all four in over 30 years - for leads Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, and supporting stars Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver. Only 14 films have achieved the feat, the last one being 1981'sReds. Thats' not the only interesting fact about this year's acting nominees, Amour's Emmanuelle Riva (85) becomes the oldest woman to land a Best Actress nod, while Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis (9) is the youngest. Tom Hooper's musical update of starpulse also garnered eight awards, including Best Picture; however Hooper did not land a Best Director nod. Best Director and Best Picture usually go hand-in-hand, and a film's chance of winning best picture without its director getting a nod usually has little chance of winning. The same goes for Kathryn Bigelow, whose Zero Dark Thirty landed a Best Picture nomination but not a Best Director nod. The Academy Awards airs live on Sunday, February 24, 2013 on ABC. Check out the full list of nominations below...

7-year-old 'Mozart' girl composes opera

Screen Shot On Uploaded Video
A seven-year-old girl has become a classical music sensation after she composed her own opera, which was highly commended by the English National Opera. Alma Deutscher is not only an accomplished composer, she is also a skilled violinist and pianist. She started composing by the time she was five and wrote a sonata at the age six, the Daily Mail reported. Videos of her work have been viewed more than 300,000 times since her father shared them on YouTube - and her abilities have led to comparisons with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who by five had mastered the keyboard and violin and started composing. Alma wrote her own opera, The Sweeper of Dreams, this year. "The music comes to me when I'm
relaxing. I go and sit down on a seat or lie down. I like thinking about fairies a lot, and princesses, and beautiful dresses," the paper quoted her as saying. She added that her best compositions are created when she is on the swing in the garden at her home in Dorking, Surrey, but she keeps a tape recorder by her bed for when inspiration strikes. The idea for The Sweeper of Dreams - which narrowly missed out on a place in the final of an English National Opera contest for adult composers - came in a dream. "Mozart composed this piece in my dream and when I got up, I sat down and played it and my father recorded it," she said. Alma's father realised his daughter had a connection with music when she was a baby. She was given her first violin for her third birthday and in less than a year, she was playing Handel sonatas. Virginia woman wins $1 million lottery twice in one day

Money Flying A Virginia woman won the lottery twice on the same day with two winning tickets for 1 million dollars each, taking her windfall gain to 2 million dollars. Virginia Fike, a Berryville, Virginia woman resident had two tickets that matched five of the six Powerball numbers in an April 7 drawing so that each ticket was worth 1 million dollars. “I’m in shock!” ABC News quoted Fike as saying in a news release from the Virginia lottery. In early April, Fike stopped at an Olde Stone Truck Stop in Virginia with her numbers ready and purchased two tickets. “I picked numbers based on my parents’ anniversary and their ages at that time, divided by the year they were married,” Fike said in the release. “I just love the jackpot games and I play when I can afford it,” she said. The jackpot that week was at 80 million dollars. In order to win the jackpot, the ticket holder has to match the five numbers and the sixth Powerball number. After the drawing, it was announced that no one had won the jackpot, but 14 people nationwide had matched five of the numbers and were entitled to 1 million dollar prizes each. Two of the winning tickets were in Virginia. Fike was in the hospital keeping her mother company. “I saw a scroll on TV about there being two 1 million-dollar winners. I looked at my mom and said ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if it was us?’“ she said. When she stopped by a convenience store, Fike had the clerk check her tickets and she discovered that she had won both of Virginia’s 1 million-dollar prizes. As per Virginia state lottery rules, winners split the jackpot, regardless of how many there are, but non-jackpot prizes from matching part of the winning sequence are not split and can be won multiple times. “It’s not that uncommon for people to buy tickets in games with the same number, but this is the biggest prize we’ve ever had in Virginia of two tickets in the same drawing,” Virginia Lottery spokesman John Hagerty said. Fike was presented with a check for 2 million dollars on Friday at the truck stop where she purchased the ticket. Winners in Virginia are required to come forward and be identified. She will receive 1.4 million dollars after deducting taxes. The store also received a 20,000 dollars bonus for selling the two winning tickets. “I must be dreaming. I look forward to helping to take care of my parents and paying some bills,” she added. Source: The Asian AgeImage: flickr.com

Schoolboy cracks age-old maths problem

A 16-year-old schoolboy has solved a mathematical problem which has stumped mathematicians for centuries, a newspaper report said. The boy put the historical breakthrough down to “schoolboy naivety.” Shouryya Ray, who moved to Germany from India with his family at the age of 12, has baffled scientists and mathematicians by solving two fundamental particle dynamics problems posed by Sir Isaac Newton over 350 years ago, Die Welt newspaper reported on Monday. Ray’s solutions make it possible to now calculate not only the flight path of a ball, but also predict how it will hit and bounce off a wall. Previously it had only been possible to estimate this using a computer, wrote the paper. Ray first came across the old problem when his secondary school, which specializes in science, set all their year-11 pupils a research project. On a visit to the Technical University in Dresden pupils received raw data to evaluate a direct numerical simulation – which can be used to describe the trajectory of a ball when it is thrown. When he realised the current method could not get an exact result, Ray decided to have a go at solving it. He puts the whole thing down to “schoolboy naivety” - he just refused to accept there was no answer to the problem. “I asked myself: why can’t it work?” he told the paper. Ray has been fascinated by what he calls the “intrinsic beauty“ of maths since an early age, according to the report. The boy was inspired by his engineer father who began setting him arithmetic problems at the age of six. He recently won a youth science competition at the state level in Saxony and won second place in the Maths and IT section at the national final. Originally from Calcutta, Ray couldn’t speak a word of German when he came to Dresden four years ago – but now he is fluent. Since then, he was moved up two classes in school and is currently sitting his Abitur exams two years early. But Ray doesn’t think he’s a genius, and told the paper he has weak points as a mathematician, as well as in sports and social sciences. Ray, whose recent breakthrough may have earned him a paragraph in the schoolbooks of the future, is currently deciding whether to study maths or physics at university. Source: Sam Daily Times

Raj Kapoor's 'Awaara' in Time's 100 greatest films

MUMBAI: Time magazine has included Raj Kapoor's 1951classic Awaara among 20 new entries added to its All-Time 100 list of the greatest films made since 1923, the beginning of the prestigious US periodical. Rethinking the movie masterpieces, Time critic Richard Corliss describes Raj Kapoor as "the great star-auteur of India's postcolonial golden age of movies - Cary Grant and Cecil B. DeMille in one handsome package." "The '50s films he headlined and directed became huge hits not just in his newly freed homeland but also across the Arab crescent from Indonesia to North Africa," Time noted. Kapoor, who modelled his screen persona on Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp, was 26 when he filmed Awaara (The Tramp). Time calls Awaara as "a glistening showcase for Kapoor and the great India siren Nargis (his lover onscreen and off)." "And of course it's a musical, whose main song, Awaara Hoon, by the famed Shanker-Jaikishan duo, soared to the top of the pop charts in India, the USSR and China." The original All-Time 100 list published in 2005 included Satyajit Ray's The Apu Trilogy, Mani Ratnam's Nayakan and Guru Dutt's Pyaasa. Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman's score for Mani Ratnam's Roja (The Rose), the tale of a woman whose lover is kidnapped by terrorists, was also among 10 Best Soundtracks. Last week, Time magazine ranked Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2002 film Devdas eighth among the ten greatest movies of the millennium (thus far).Source: Sam Daily Times

China's movie sector becomes second-largest

China overtook Japan as the world's second-biggest cinema market in the first quarter of the year thanks to the breakneck growth of the nation's film industry, but its overwhelming reliance on the box office showed both its huge potential and immaturity, according to industry experts. Last year, China's box-office receipts grew 33.3 percent to 13.15 billion yuan ($2.08 billion) and the industry's market value reached 17.25 billion yuan. Continued growth in the first quarter of this year made China surpass Japan in box-office receipts, said Mike Ellis, Asia-Pacific president of the Motion Picture Association of America, at a conference on Thursday, without elaborating.  The number of China's cinema screens has increased from 4,753 in 2006 to 10,700 in 2011, according to Ellis.  "Last year, China added on average eight screens in a single day. No nation in the world grew at that fast pace," said Ellis. The US film industry "is not growing, but internationally the market is doing terrifically well, here and throughout other nations", Ellis told China Daily. Box-office receipts in the United States and Canada totaled $10.2 billion in 2011, down 4 percent compared with 2010, according to MPAA statistics. But the US share of the global market grew from 57.3 percent in 2010 to 58.4 percent in 2011. During Vice-President Xi Jinping's February visit to the US, China agreed to allow 14 more foreign films into the domestic market annually. Foreign film companies will also be permitted to take a 25 percent cut of the box office, compared with 13 percent previously. Ellis said this presented an "exciting picture" for the US film industry. He has also noted despite its rapid growth, China's film industry is still largely untapped as
the average Chinese person only goes to cinema 0.3 times per year, compared with over five times annually in Iceland, the top movie-going country. However, despite the rosy prospects for China's film industry, a perennial problem remains, its overwhelming dependence on the box office. Ellis said that in China, box-office receipts account for 90 percent of the total return on investment, while it is just 30 percent in the US. The other 70 percent came from sales of copyrights to DVD companies, cable television firms and national TV networks.  "There is a huge revenue loss for Chinese films due to content theft, which has prevented China from developing a film industry value chain based on copyright trade," Ellis said. "If you don't protect what you own, you own nothing," Ellis added.  If reliance on the box office can be reduced to the same level as the US, China's film market could almost quadruple to $6.66 billion. Speaking at the same event, Charles Zhang, founder and CEO of Sohu.com, a major Web portal in China, said China's television industry experienced an explosive boom as video websites boosted demand for professionally produced TV serials. According to Zhang, three years ago, a TV drama producer would be excited if a single episode could be sold for 1,000 yuan, while a popular TV drama can now be sold for 1 million yuan per episode. But unlike TV, Zhang said film's cost per unit is too high for advertisers to support. The flourishing video websites have so far yet to reduce the Chinese movie industry's reliance on the box office.  Film fans in China still find it easy to download a pirated version of a new movie, a reality that industry insiders said they have to learn to cope with, though unwillingly.  "We have to develop ourselves on the assumption that piracy will exist and will exist for a long time," said Hu Ming, vice-president of Huayi Brothers, China's largest private TV and film producer. She said negotiations were always "awkward and hurt relationships" when it came to copyrights. he incomplete development of the value chain, according to Hu, is one of the major differences between the movie industries in China and the US. And how to address this remains a challenge for Chinese filmmakers. Source: China.org.cn
