The Croods

© Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
This prehistoric comedy adventure follows a family as they embark on the journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always shielded them from danger is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the family discovers an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures - and their outlook is changed forever. By Richard Kirkham: The Croods is pretty much what you would want from an animated family
film. There is a breathtaking visual palate, a family safe adventure, and humor geared to the little ones and the adults in your group. While it does not reach the heights of a Pixar film or the the warmth of traditional Disney fare, it is serviceable and entertaining if not always memorable. This is exactly the kind of movie that parents want to be able to take their children to during spring break and the timing of it's release should insure that the movie is pretty successful. From a story perspective, "The Croods" is pretty standard stuff. It is a coming of age story that focuses on a family of cavemen. Just as the oldest daughter is entering a rebellious stage, the territory of the planet is changing and newer smarter hominids appear and offer a threat of change but also survival. Of course the newest species is represented by a hunk of a cave boy who is threatening to the Dad/Leader of the family troop in a couple of obvious ways.
This gives us a teen age romance and a middle age crisis all in one fell swoop. There are some contrived personal relationship moments but they fit with the theme of the film and while they may be cliche, there is a reason that cliches exist in the first place. Basically families are problematic but ultimately they are held together by the love that each member feels for the others. We skipped seeing this in 3D but it looks like it might have been fun. It does seem to me however that in order to take advantage of the 3D process, every animated movie is using some kind of sweeping swooshing flume ride style action
sequence. Once again, as was true in a number of previous animated 3D films, characters slide down slopes, get swallowed by tube like caves and roll away on waterways to give us a thrill in visual dimensions. There is also a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as creatively designed creatures to keep us jumping and oohing and aahing. James Cameron's Pandora has nothing on these imaginative animated images. The character voice work is efficient. Nichols Cage is somewhat subdued since his performance here is animated and the over the top delivery he is often guilty of in live action films is moderated by this format. Everyone else was fine but not very distinctive. Cloris Leachman does the patented old lady routine that was the realm of Phyllis Diller and Betty White before her. Emma Stone does fine by "Eep", the teen age cave girl with more curiosity than her father is ever going to be happy with. Ryan Reynold voices the appropriately named "Guy", plenty resonate and future hunk-like. So many people contribute to animated films that it is difficult to pinpoint credit or blame for some elements. There
are only seven human characters, most of the other voice/sound work involves animals and eruptions. I appreciated that "The Croods" did not attempt to live up to their names. There were no fart or poop jokes, and that is pretty rare for a kids movie now a days. There is an early sequence that apes American Football and it seemed obvious to me that the Trojan Marching Band/Fleetwood Mac hit "Tusk" was being used very freely. It turns out that it was adapted by the film score composer and there was credit given, alleviating the need for a lawsuit except by Bruin fans who are unknowingly going to be subjected
to chants of "U-C-L-A sucks" during this scene. Maybe that's why i ended up liking the movie as well as I did. The reality is that there were plenty of parents with their kids at the a.m. screening we went to, and all the little girls seemed happy to be there and all the little boys identified with the adventure elements. If it is a success,  someone will  plan a sequel, but I think in the long run it would be better for the reputation of the film if it stays a one off. The story does not demand any follow up and the creativity would probably diminish. Very much like it's stable mate "Madagascar ", "The Croods" is a well executed piece of entertainment that could overstay it's welcome. Let's just enjoy it for what it is and move on to something else next time. Source: http://kirkhamclass.blogspot.in/http://www.starpulse.com/

Women snub men with 'great sense of humour'

The Three Stooges

This movie is an adaptation of the slapstick comedy in the 50s and my parents will definitely have more formative experience about The Stooges than I. Just recently, I was able to watch it when the local terrestrial station airs it every midnight in their selective retro slots. Been following it for about six weeks, I begin to understand why they were the true celebrity back then and how believably workable the slapstick dialog and hilarious action was. In this modern  era, Hollywood would love to chunk out the old stuffs and brandishes it with new fancy stuffs for the audience to gag, although usually it does not work well. This movie is just like  that, unfortunately. The Three Stooges has hits and misses. For that many already know this will be it after all. You do not watch this for anything other than a good laugh. If you hope for something else, you definitely have no idea at all. While the humors are incredibly lame, crude, laughable and faithful to the original; the movie lacks the nostalgia and humility that makes the 50s
comedy so lovable and magical. That is the biggest miss any remake can possibly go. Either something is missing or we just cannot go along with this kind of comedy anymore, but I strongly believe that it is due to the plot. Farrelly’s screenplay is vulnerable to extreme absurdity (especially in the middle stint) but is also treated with some clever-yet-lame physical comedies. As the plot goes, The Three Stooges is all about Moe, Larry and Curly. If there is one thing that the trio has truly learned during their 30 years of stay with the nuns and orphans of the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage, it is trouble. One day, the orphanage was forced to close due to economic meltdown and financial difficulties. The Stooges stands up and pledges to finds considerable amount of money to save the orphanage. On arrival to the big city, they find rare opportunities to earn substantial cash through a murder plot against a millionaire and  an accidental stardom in a popular TV program. The casting of Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso as Moe, Larry and Curly, respectively is just ideal. Physically and performance-wise are just perfectly-pitched and timed. Never have I seen characters doing eye-poking, head-hammering and face-slapping so mesmerizing. The addition of Larry David as one nun who hates the trio is also a welcoming note that enhances the acting. For all that, there is nothing to complaint about. In the end, as perfect as the casting in The Three Stooges is, it yields to see that it is not entirely a bad attempt to evoke some laugh with its lame and vulnerable plot that lacks the proper nostalgia. Penelope Cruz loves acting challenges

Penelope Cruz loves acting challenges
Penelope Cruz says she loves taking on different acting challenges and wants to continue working in Spanish films. Topping her wishlist are films in which she can experiment with her accents.
Spanish actress Penelope Cruz said at the Toronto International Film Festival that she will never stop making films in Spain and in Spanish, but that she also would like to play a character with a British accent and take on the role of a stereotypical California "valley girl". Cruz presented her latest film "Venuto al mondo" (Twice Born), an Italian-Spanish co-production directed by Sergio Castellitto and also starring Emile Hirsch, Adnan Haskovic and Saadet Aksoy, Thursday at the TIFF. "I love being part of projects like this, although I'll always want to keep working in my country and in Spanish. I'll never stop for many reasons. It's also quite refreshing to go back and work in my own language," Cruz said. "Because in this (film), as much as I loved it, it was a big challenge to shoot 70 percent of the film in English and the rest in Italian. But the English had to have an Italian accent. I love those challenges, but I can't say it was easy," she added. Penelope Cruz, whose upcoming projects include British director Ridley Scott's The Counselor and Spanish filmmaker's Pedro Almodovar's "Los amantes pasajeros" (I'm So Excited), said she has a passion for accents. "I love accents. Now that I'm more comfortable in English, I'd like to play (a role with) a British accent. I have a character. She's really fun, but I can't talk about her. But it's a character with a British accent," she said. "And I'd also like to play a 'valley girl'. One day," the actress said laughing. In an interview published last Saturday by Italian daily La Stampa, Cruz said that she plans to produce at least two films a year in her homeland to create jobs amid sky-high unemployment. "I want to bring jobs to my people ... I'll use my privileged position. It's what interests me the most right now. I know it's a grain of sand in the desert, but it's a responsibility I think I have," Cruz said. "I'll produce a couple of films a year. A way to give work to hundreds of people. It's a set idea I have." Cruz, winner of a best-supporting actress Oscar for her role as an unstable artist in Woody Allen's 2008 comedy-drama "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", said she has worked hard but also has had a lot of opportunities in life. The talents of "an entire generation of highly trained young people" in Spain are being wasted, Cruz said, adding that though they have lots to offer there is nothing for them to do but "bang their heads against the wall or go out in the street and protest." Spain's economy has been battered in recent years by the collapse of a massive real-estate bubble in the context of the 2008-09 global recession. The country's unemployment rate stands at nearly 25 percent and at more than 50 percent among young people. Despite the high joblessness, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government has opted for a series of austerity measures in recent months to bring a high budget deficit into line with European Union mandates. Those measures have been harshly criticized by unions and sparked large-scale street protests. Cruz told the Italian daily that her role of a single mother who brings her teenage son to Sarajevo in "Venuto al Mondo" and the character she played in Almodovar's "Volver" (To Return) have been the two most challenging of her career thus far. Source: ApunKaChoice.com

I'm not an animal in the zoo: Preity

Actress Preity Zinta says she was greeted by "the shock of 40 camera flashes" when she arrived at the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport and ended up twisting her ankle due to the paparazzi's attempt to photograph her. "Sitting at home with a twisted ankle post the airport assault by photographers. First, I shoot all night and get on the plane and then get pushed," tweeted Preity, who landed in Mumbai on Sunday from Prague. The actress came back to the city after shooting in Prague for her debut production ‘Ishkq In Paris’. Photographers are said to have been stationed at the airport as Hollywood star Ashton Kutcher was expected to be there. However, the cameramen spotted Preity in a super casual look, wearing loose lowers and a T-shirt, her hair undone, and no make-up. Media has flashed pictures of Preity hiding her face behind her hand, hair and staff, but Preity says she wasn't "hiding". "Pushed and jumped on at the airport. It was raining, so I slipped. Wasn't hiding my face, was trying to recover from the shock of 40 camera flashes. And yes, in the end I was pissed off so then I definitely didn't want to show my face," she posted. The 37-year-old, whose car was damaged by paparazzi outside international talk show queen Oprah Winfrey's party in January, is angry. "If photographers ask me politely I will oblige, but next time I will either attack someone or then file a police complaint because THIS IS NOT FAIR. I am a human being not some animal in the ZOO! If my security would have pushed them, then news would report my staff assaulted the media," added Preity. She is only thankful that the shooting for ‘Ishkq In Paris’ is over. "Otherwise I'd be hopping around with a twisted ankle," she wrote, adding that she cared to give her side of the story on a social networking platform as "Every story has two sides". Me and slapstick humor? Not sure: Chitrangda Singh

There is a certain image that one carries of Chitrangda Singh once her name pops up. After all, none of her three films so far, ‘Sorry Bhai', ‘Kal - Yesterday and Tomorrow’ and ‘Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi’, fell into a mainstream bracket. ‘Sorry Bhai’ came closest to being so but its release over the weekend of Mumbai terror attack proved disastrous for its box office fortunes. The film failed and now it would be a while before Chitrangda is seen on the big screen again. In PNC produced ‘Aur Devdas’, she yet again gets serious with her own take on 'Chandramukhi' while enacting the character of a socialite. "But it's not that I am stuck up on doing any particular kind of roles", protests Chitrangda when questioned if she would forever be doing cinema belonging to this genre. That seems to be the case though, considering her choice of films over a period of time. With the kind of glam quotient she comes with, doesn't she wish to expand her horizon? Doesn't she wish to chill out for a change and do a film where she can just let herself go free without any limitations of coming up with yet another 'intense/award worthy/deep rooted' performance? "You are making it all sound much more serious than it is", laughs Chitrangda, "I am not averse to being a part of commercial fun cinema. In fact, I love Priyadarshan's films. They come with great situational humor and are so funny. Give me a film coming from his stable and I will be glad to be a part of it." Talking of fun, hypothetically speaking if she has Rohit Shetty approaching her for ‘Golmaal 3’, would she be willing to be a part of it? After all the ‘Golmaal’ series too is a lot funny, has great commercial ingredients and promise assured box office returns! "'Golmaal? Errr, I will have to really give a movie belonging to such genre a lot of thought before I sign on the dotted line", says Chitrangda in an amused tone, "And that's because such movies belong to slapstick genre and I am not too sure how much of such humor would I would be able to carry off. However, a point to ponder indeed!" Meanwhile, she seems pretty excited when questioned on ‘Aur Devdas’. Apparently, her character is much deeper and darker than all the versions of 'Chandramukhi' that have been seen on celluloid till date? "Well, (director) Sudhir Mishra has his own interpretation of 'Chandramukhi' that gives the film an edge", Chitrangda reveals, "I play a very ambitious woman who doesn't think twice about using whatever possible means available to her for getting her way through. She knows that she is in a cutthroat world and has no hesitation in even using her sensuality to make a couple of deals go through." Source: Screen IndiaImage: https://upload.wikimedia.org/

Its important to maintain innocence in adult comedy: Riteish Deshmukh

Actor Riteish Deshmukh, who would be next seen in adult comedy, 'Kya Super Kool Hai Hum', says it is important to maintain some kind of innocence in such films without going overboard. After the success of 'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum' in 2005, Riteish is again pairing up with Tusshar Kapoor in this sequel to tickle the funny bone of the audience. Tusshar plays a struggling actor, while Riteish is a struggling DJ. The duo play innocent men, who inadvertently get into trouble doing things. Also, both the actors are set to get dirtier with their acts in the sequel. "While we were enacting few scenes for 'Kya Kool Hai Hum', we had no idea how the audience would react to those scenes, as we were attempting something new and different. We were trying to maintain the innocence. What happens is when you have a film like this, an adult comedy to maintain innocence in it is important," Riteish told reporters last evening, after unveiling the first look of the sequel. "That time when we were working we were thinking how we would maintain things rightly," he said. And it was the storyline that forced him to do the film. "Tusshar and I had read one-two scripts, for this sequel, but nothing interested us that time. But this time around, Sachin came up with this script and it was accepted by Ekta Kapoor (producer), even when I read it I also liked it. Script was the main reason for me to do this sequel," he said. "There is uniqueness and newness to the storyline, it takes from where the two characters left..humor is also of new kind. The humor quotient and the way of presenting it is also different." The film directed by Sachin Yardi, besides featuring the duo - - Tusshar and Riteish -, stars Neha Sharma and Sarah Jane Dias, who are the new additions to the second installment. The trailer, available on the web, opens with the signature tune and some shots from 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham'. It further shows that how Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Jaya Bachchan are being shown as thoroughly disgusted with the obscene acts of Tusshar and Riteish. "When we use any footage of other film it cannot be given without the permission of the filmmaker. I must say, hats off to Karan, who has a great sense of humor. `Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham - - is a cult classic family movie, not many people would have the guts to make fun of their film. But to understand and have a sense of humor is important," Riteish said. "It ('Kya Super Kool Hai Hum') is not a family film and we are trying to say that through by using Karan's film. We are not making fun of his film, instead we are making fun of our film by saying it is not a family film. It is not about getting family together, but having fun and enjoying," he said. Katrina Kaif loves Shahrukh Khan’s humour

Katrina Kaif and Shahrukh Khan are said to be bonding thick as thieves while shooting for Yash Chopra’s film in London. Shahrukh Khan, whose wit and sense of humour never goes into hibernation, has been wisecracking on everything trivial to important on the sets of the yet untitled romantic film being shot in London. And Katrina Kaif, who was shootingEk Tha Tiger with Salman Khanbefore joining the shoot of Yash Chopra’s film, is said to be enjoying Shahrukh’s wit, every bit. Moreover, Katrina Kaif is highly impressed by Shahrukh’s chivalry and decorum while shooting with her. According to a source, Shahrukh treats Katrina like a lady and is highly courteous to her. But that doesn’t mean he’s formal to her. In fact, SRK and Kat are on casual terms and are often spotted sharing a laugh. In a latest image that has appeared on the web, Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif are seen enjoying food on the sets of the film in London. Though Katrina and Shahrukh have been on friendly terms for a long while now, the chemistry between them was for all to see when Shahrukh Khan planted a kiss on Katrina’s cheek while performing at an award function. Recently, Shahrukh hinted about a romantic scene in the Yash Chopra film, apparently with Katrina Kaif. “On a lighter note realized u can't wear warmers if u want to do romantic scenes...they come in the way of ur coolness...or is it just me???” Shahrukh Khan tweeted a few days back. The London schedule of the Yash Chopra movie is for about 35 days, which means ample time for SRK and Katrina to spend together. I am giving Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, all these guys a chance in Hollywood: Salman Khan

Have you ever wondered why Salman Khan has never opted for Hollywood? Well, the actor himself has revealed the reason. Just for a brush up, in the year 2004, Salman Khan was named the seventh-best-looking man in the world and the best looking man in India by US’s People magazine. So why didn’t Sallu think about Hollywood? Putting on his funny shoes, the actor said, “All my friends who have gone to America, they don’t even want to come back for a holiday, wonder why. I am an actor, those guys were the ‘sensible’ ones, educated – engineers, doctors, scientists. These guys went there and made a lot of money, respect,” he said. “Me, I am giving Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, all these guys a chance. Otherwise…poor guys,” the 46-year-old added. Salman Khan was at an event organized by Indo-American Chamber Of Commerce (IACC) on Wednesday. Targeting Hollywood films, Salman said, “Amazing movies, they make anything look good. Like for example the names I took, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise. We just go on emotions and heart. We overdo anything, I mean guys like us also look really bad,” said Salman. He concluded his response with his arch-rival’s dialogue from “My Name Is Khan”: “I mean my name is actually Khan and I actually am not a terrorist.” Source: GaramGossips

I wouldn’t like to name anyone, but I am not the only tiger in the industry,” Tusshar said here, perhaps taking an indirect dig at “Ek Tha Tiger” star Salman Khan. For now, the actor is just happy teaming up with younger actresses on the big screen. In his latest release, adult-comedy “Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum”, he has been paired opposite Neha Sharma. And he says he would love to work with her again. “Next film with Neha for sure. Riteish gets serious after marriage

Actor Riteish Deshmukh, who has a string of hit comedy movies under his belt, is now planning to get serious with a thriller and a black comedy. "My next two films are comedies but yes, after that I will be doing a couple of serious films. I have decided on two films - one is a thriller and the other is a black comedy," the 33-year-old told at an event here. Some of Riteish's hit comedies include "Masti", "Kya Kool Hai Hum", "Malamaal Weekly", "Heyy Babyy", "Dhamaal" and "Housefull." Asked if he is bored of the comedy genre, Riteish told, "I am not bored of comedies, I have done four comedy films. When did I say that I am bored of comedies?" He was last seen in "Housefull 2", and his forthcoming movie "Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum" is a sex comedy. He admits the poster of the film, a sequel to the 2005 "Kya Kool Hai Hum", is "naughty". Also starring Tusshar Kapoor, the movie is slated to release Aug 2. Source: GaramGossips
